George Martin Stephen

Dr. George Martin Stephen is the current High Master (headmaster) of St Paul's School, London. He is also an author.

[edit] Education and training

He was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland, England, and at Leeds University, where he obtained his BA degree in English and History, followed by a PhD from Sheffield University. From there Stephen moved into teaching, becoming headmaster of The Perse School Cambridge, then High Master of Manchester Grammar School, where he focussed on widening access to the school by increasing bursaries for the children of less wealthy families. In 2004 he moved to St Paul's, which will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2009.

He has published 15 books on English literature and naval history. He has also published three historical crime thrillers. He has served as Chairman of the Headmasters Conference. His wife is the headmistress of South Hampstead High School.
