George Hugh Niederauer

George Hugh Niederauer (b. June 14, 1936, Los Angeles, California) is a Roman Catholic bishop, currently serving as the Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Francisco; he was appointed on December 15, 2005, by Pope Benedict XVI. Msgr. Niederauer formerly served as the Bishop of Salt Lake City prior to his installation as archbishop at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco, California on February 15, 2006.

Niederauer was ordained to the priesthood in 1962 for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was appointed Bishop of Salt Lake City by Pope John Paul II on November 3, 1994, and ordained on January 25 of the next year. Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles, was his principal consecrator, while William Levada, Archbishop of Portland, and Tod David Brown, Bishop of Boise, were his principal co-consecrators.
Shortly after his installation as Archbishop, Msgr. Niederauer traveled to Reno, Nevada, to serve as the principal consecrator on February 17, 2006, of the seventh Bishop of Reno, Msgr. Randolph Calvo. He was assisted by Msgr. Phillip Straling and Msgr. John Wester as co-consecrating bishops.
