[edit] Career
According to Ken Gwertz's article "Landscape Alchemist," George Hargreaves' interest in Landscape Architecture was partially due to a summer trip that he went on when he was 18 years old. During the trip to the Rocky Mountains George Hargreaves climbed Flat Top Mountain where he experienced a life changing scene, of that scene Hargreaves said "It wasn't just the mountains or the trees or any of the individual elements. It was something about the sense of space itself. When I got back home I tried to explain this to my uncle...and he said, 'Have you ever thought about going into landscape architecture?'" Shortly thereafter George Hargreaves enrolled at the University of Georgia and received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 1977. A few years after receiving his Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design in 1979, George founded Hargreaves Associates. George is currently both a Senior Principal at Hargreaves Associates as well as the Peter Louis Hornbeck Professor in Pracice of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University. Hargreaves specializes in turning wasted lands into beautifully landscaped spaces. An example of this is the Parque do Tejo e Trancao in Lisbon, Portugal. The site was a sewage treatment plant and landfill site. Hargreaves' design improved the former sewage treatment plant from a two tier process plant into a three tier process plant. Along with the improvement to the treatment plant, Hargreaves turned the site into a park that combines environmental uses as well as an educational center for visitors. Hargreaves received the Waterfront Center Honor Award in 1995 for Parque do Tejo e Trancao.
