George Francis (Robot Wars)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Francis is the chief engineer of the Chaos 2 team from the BBC television series Robot Wars. He comes from Ipswich, and is self-employed.

Although Chaos 2 is classed as one of the best robots seen on the series and its engineering is well developed, George's remote control skill is clearly a significant factor. One of the key moves developed by George was to completely flip his opponent's robot out of the arena.

Chaos 2 and George have twice won the Robot Wars championship in series 3 and 4.

Despite Chaos 2’s success it was always one of the least popular robots. Whether this was because it was perceived as the villain in most bouts or because during one fight against Razer in the First World Championship, during which George Francis drove his machine into the pit rather than have Chaos 2 destroyed by Razer after its flipper appeared to lose power, is not clear.

Many challengers later adopted this method of fighting, which in turn put the entire ethos of Robot Wars in doubt. Many saw this more strategic approach as less entertaining for the audience, which may have led to the programme's demise.
