George Douglas, 1st Earl of Dumbarton

George Douglas, 1st Earl of Dumbarton (1635- 20 March 1692) was a Scottish nobleman.

The son of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas and his second wife Lady Mary Gordon of Huntly, Douglas was the younger brother of the William Douglas, 1st Earl of Selkirk. He married Anne Wheatley (d 25 April 1691), daughter of Robert Wheatley of Bracknell.

He was colonel of the Douglas Regiment in the service of Louis XIV. On 30 June 1667, Samuel Pepys met Lord George Douglas in Rochester and mentions seeing his Regiment, known as "Dumbarton's Regiment" (later the Royal Scots) of which he was Colonel.

Hope was created Earl of Dumbarton in 1675; he suppressed Argyll's rising in 1685. He accompanied James VII and II to France, and died at St Germain-en-Laye.
