George Chaponda

Dr. George T. Chaponda (born November 1, 1942 in Mendulo village, Mulanje district, Malawi) is a Malawian diplomat and politician.
Chaponda attended the University of Delhi from 1963 to 1969 and studied history and political science. He then worked as an assistant manager of road services in Malawi and as a legal advisor. He studied law at the University of Zambia from 1979 to 1983 and at Yale University from 1983 to 1984.
From 1984 to 2003, Chaponda worked at the Office for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, living in several different countries. In 2004 he entered Malawian politics and was elected to Parliament for the United Democratic Front from Mulanje south district. In June 2004, he was appointed foreign minister in the cabinet of newly elected president Bingu wa Mutharika. He served in that position until sometime early in 2005, when he was reassigned to Ministry of Local Government.
Chaponda is a Christian, is married and has children.
