He was involved in the last months of WWI fighting on the Western Front.

He married English novelist Vera Brittain in 1925. Their daughter is well-known < math > < math > < math > < math > Britishpolitician[[Shirley</math></math></math></math> Williams]], now Baroness Williams of Crosby. They also had a son, John Brittain-Catlin, who died in the mid 1980s.
