Geomechanics

Geomechanics is the study of the engineering behaviour of soil and rock. The Greek prefix Geo means Earth, and Mechanics looks at the behaviour of physical systems under the action of forces.

The two main disciplines of Geomechanics are Soil mechanics and Rock mechanics. The former deals with the behaviour of "soft ground" from a local scale up to landslide or the foundation of buildings, and the latter with solid rock, crevices or tunneling. A common aspect of rock/soil is the technique of drillings and the observation of phenomena of the local geodynamics.

Other geomechanical sectors are related to geotechnical engineering: e.g. borehole physics, well planning, wellbore or dump stability, pore pressure analyses and Granular flow. Modern developments relate to cyclic loading, high-order continua, limit analysis or different transport phenomena.
