Geography of Gosport

This article describes the geography of the town of Gosport. Gosport is a town in Hampshire, on the south coast of England.
Gosport lies on the peninsula which forms the western side of Portsmouth harbour.
At the southern tip of Gosport is Gilkicker Point. West of here is Stokes Bay.
On the easternside of the town, on the west shore of Portsmouth Harbour are a number of named districts. From north to south, these are Elson, Hardway and Priddy's Hard. The large southeastern district of Gosport is called Newtown.
South of Newtown is Haslar Creek, which flows into Portsmouth Harbour near the harbour mouth. The lowest part of Haslar Creek is called Haslar Lake; at its western end, the creek splits into two branches. These are called Workhouse Lake (the northern branch) and Stoke Lake (the southern branch). South of Stoke Lake and north of Gilkicker Point is the district of Clayhall.
Northwest of Stoke Lake is Alverstoke, to the west of which is Browndown, where the River Alver flows into Stokes Bay.
In the west of Gosport are the HMS Sultan base, at the west end of which is a large sports field called HMS Sultan Polo Fields. North of here is the district of Rowner. North of central Gosport, along the A32 are two other named disticts, Bridgemary, which lies just to the north of the centre, and Fleetlands, at the northend end of the town.
