Geoffrey Freer Stakes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Geoffrey Freer Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for three-year-old and above thoroughbreds run over a distance of 1 mile 5 furlongs and 61 yards (2,671 metres) at Newbury Racecourse in August.

It was first run in 1949 as the Oxfordshire Stakes and was re-named in 1969 in memory of Geoffrey Freer, a manager of Newbury Racecourse. The race was downgraded to Group 3 status in 2006, having previously been a Group 2. Simultaneously, the Hungerford Stakes at the same meeting received the reverse re-classification, moving up to Group 2.
