From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General Wolfe Elementary School is a neighborhood public school in Baltimore, MD. General Wolfe Elementary School is named after James Wolfe of the British Army. Currently serving around 130 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade, General Wolfe Elementary is a unique school in the Baltimore City Public School System. Located in the Southeast of Baltimore, General Wolfe has served a vibrant, ever-changing community. Currently, this neighborhood is home to a large Latino population from Mexico and Central America. For this reason, General Wolfe provides English as a Second Language to nearly fifty percent (50%) of its students.
While there has been a public school on the current site of General Wolfe Elementary School since the late 1800's, the current building and school was built in the mid-1970's.
Until the 2005-2006 school year General Wolfe Elementary School has not met state academic goals. As a result General Wolfe was placed on a state Restructuring List. After the arrival of many new instructional and administrative personnel in the 2005-2006 school year General Wolfe Elementary School met every academic and non-academic goal set by the State of Maryland and achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in accordance with national legislation. [1]
Currently the General Wolfe Elementary School community has submitted an application to become a Conversion Public Charter School in Baltimore City. This would allow the school more control over curricular, financial, personnel issues and professional development. As a conversion charter school the school would maintain a geographic enrollment zone that would allow any student living in that zone to attend the school. Any empty seats after all zone students were enrolled would be open to any student in Baltimore City as chosen through a lottery process. As a school in Restructuring which is applying for charter status as a solution to academic difficulty, General Wolfe Elementary School would be the first school nationally to attempt a charter school solution to poor academic performance under the No Child Left Behind act.
The climate and culture of the school has changed in the past year. [2] The charter school application enjoys the support of all the different stakeholders in the community, including the administration, staff and faculty, parents, community associations and businesses. Pending approval of the Charter School status application, General Wolfe Elementary School would open in August 2007 as Wolfe Street Academy.
