Genei Ryodan

The Genei Ryodan (also known as the Phantom Troupe) is the name for a gang of thieves, from the anime/manga series Hunter × Hunter.
The group consists of a total of 13 nen users. New members join the group by killing (and therefore replacing) a previous member. In case of where a member dies of other causes, the leader of the group, Kuroro Lucifer, is responsible to find a suitable replacement.

Very little is known about Kuroro's past except for the fact that he originated from Ryuuseigai. Ryuuseigai, the City of the Shooting Stars, is a city of outcasts. People who have no official records of existence, it is a place that few even know exists. Sometime in the past, he formed the Genei Ryodan with six other Ryuuseigai residents and left the city. Later, the group was joined by more members, in accordance with Kuroro's idea of a group comprising of exactly 13 members.

Kuroro Lucifer is intellegent and charismatic. He is an enigmatic who appears as a calm, handsome young man. He seems to be a born leader, able to hold the group together despite the volatile personailities that make up the group.
When in York Shin City, he uses his calm presence and communication abilities to assume another personality in order to gain Neon Nostrade's trust. He is a born leader, and well versed in strategies. He easily controls the Genei Ryodan which clearly contain some individuals with the most volatile personalities.
The only people Kuroro does care about are his fellow Genei Ryodan. When Kuroro reads Neon's prophecy which contained Uvogin's death, he cries for them. Later on he performs a massacre in memory of his comrade. Besides that, he shows no fear of his own death, even anticipating it. Another hunter, Senritsu (Melody), states, when she listened to his heartbeat, he sounded as if he was living with death, and apparently appears sadistically happy with it. To Kuroro the Genei Ryodan are more important than his own life. He stresses that the importance of a leader only extends to following his commands, but the group should always be placed first before the leaders life.
By the end of the Genei Ryodan Story Arc, Kuroro's heart is bound by Kurapika's Chain of Judgement (materialized chain with blade at the end). This will pierce through Kuroro's heart and kill him immediately under the following conditions:
- He tries to use his Nen
- He talks to a fellow Genei Ryodan gang member. *Note* When Hisoka initially tries to talk to Kuroro, he just keeps silent, as he still believed Hisoka to be a member of Genei Ryodan. Not until Hisoka took off the spider tattoo on his back to prove that he had been deceiving the Ryodan did Kuroro begin to talk to him.
Instead of killing Kuroro, Kurapika renders him powerless to contain the Genei Ryodan. Kuroro sets off to the east in order to fulfill the prophecy given him by Neon.
[edit] Talents and Nen Ability
Kuroro is a quick thinker and very able-bodied. His ability to fight off the two most powerful members of the Zaoldyeck family of assassins at once is proof of his enormous fighting skill and strength. Zeno does hold that he could defeat Kuroro in a one-versus-one fight, but remarks "Although, if you really wanted to kill me, that'd be another thing."
Kuroro's Nen Ability, called "Skill Hunter: Bandit's Secret", allows him to steal the Nen Abilities of other people to use them as his own. The theft victim, of course, no longer has access to his ability. The theft happens under strict conditions:
- The user must witness the nen ability in action
- He must enquire about the ability and know how it works
- His victim's hand must touch the book's cover
- All of the above must be done within an hour
To use one of the stolen abilities, he materializes a special book and turns to the page of the wanted ability. While using an ability, the book has to remain opened. Additionally, an ability vanishes from the book, when its former user dies.
[edit] Known Nen Abilities in the Book
- The ability to teleport a person back and forth from one place to another, without that person's consent. He uses it on Nobunaga when he is about to attack Hisoka, as quarrels inside the Troupe are supposed to be either solved verbally or, if no solution can be found, by coin flipping.
The Indoor Fish
- A materialization of a fish that can only survive in a completely sealed room. The fish looks like a skeleton and feeds on human flesh. While the person is being fed on, they neither feel pain or lose blood, and will stay conscious despite being mortally wounded. Once the fish disappears, the usual effects of the wounds manifest, often killing the victim.
Fun Fun Cloth
- An ability owned by the Owl, a member of the Injyuu (Shadow Beasts). This cloth is materialized, and can increase and decrease in size according to the user's will. Whatever is covered in the cloth decreases in size until it fits in the palm of a hand. The user can make it go back to its original size by letting it out of the bag. People can also be shrunk this way, without being injured.
- Kuroro obtains this ability while the Ryodan torture the Owl after they captured him to find out how he hid the auction pieces they intended to steal.
Lovely Ghost Writer
- An ability stolen from Neon Nostrade. It creates accurate predictions of future events. The user cannot predict their own future. The ability requires:
- A Person's Full Name
- Their Date of Birth
- Their Blood Type
- The target person writes the required information on a piece of paper, then hands it to the abilities user, who then calls the "Lovely Ghost Writer", a sort of green monster that attaches to the users arm and moves his pen. The user does not know what he writes, being in a trance-like state.
- The prophecies take up a specific pattern. They are made up of 4 to 5 paragraphs of 4 lines each corresponding to the weeks or months to come. The first paragraph is always about something that has already happened.
- Neon refuses to read her own predictions, feeling it would spoil her ability, but Kuroro has his predictions read out by the addressees. So this seems not to be an ability restriction, but rather a matter of personal style.

Background: Bonorenofu originates from the Gyudondondo tribe, and is one of the Genei Ryodan who did not originate from Ryuuseigai. He dresses in bandages, which cover up a mass number of holes throughout his body.
Nen Ability: Batte Le Cantabile He plays music through the holes on his skin during battle, with different songs creating different nen effects, such as transformation of his own body or the materialization of objects. He is from the Gyudondondo tribe, and when the boys from this tribe are 3 years old, needles are poked into their body. These needles are slowly replaced with bigger needles, and eventually sticks, until holes in the skin are created. The people of this tribe are called "dancing warriors", perhaps ascribing to the different sounds that are created depending on the holes.
There are two different phases to his nen: The prologue and the Jupiter. The Prologue phase allows him to materialize a warrior to attack for him. The Jupiter phase allows him to materialize a giant boulder and crush his enemies.
Appearance: Bonorenofu looks like a mummy, partially dressed in rags. During the York Shin arc, his appearance was insignificant. During the Chimera Ant art, he was seen fighting with the rest of the Genei Ryodan against the Chimera ants.

A rather mysterious member of the Genei Ryodan, Feitan is attired in what one would expect from a bandit-- dark clothes with a skullhead scarf that covers his mouth. His droopy eyes either hints about his boredom or his affinity to sleep. Silence is golden--for Feitan seldom speaks. When he does, usually there's a word missing. Feitan's first language most likely isn't Japanese.
Feitan kills people in the blink of an eye, as shown when he tore off several people's heads in a massacre at York Shin City. His movement is so fast that one cannot even see the flash of his weapon (his umbrella contains a sword) or the attack he used--only a dead body remains.
Nen Abilities - Pain Packer: Pain Packer allows Feitan to transform all of the damage that he has received into a minitature sun that burns the victim painfully to death. While using this ability, he can also transform Nen into armor to protect himself from the heat.

A hulking, Frankensteinian monster is what Franklin appears to be, complete with scars and sewn-up wounds that ravage his face. It does seem though, that beneath his harsh exterior lies a small, caring spot in his character, as Franklin acts as a care-giver to Shizuku, and shows concern of her well-being.
Nen Ability - Double Machine Gun: Franklin is a human machine gun, as his fingers cap off to reveal chambers where he channels his nen that shoot out as bullets. His fingers weren't required to be cut off and used as caps in order to achieve this, but Franklin did so because he felt "it would be more effective." Doing this actually did greatly enhance the force of his Nen Bullets. This power has been shown to wipe out a room full of people within seconds.

The most distinctive thing about Korutopi is his haggard appearance. A thick and messy mane of hair flops down his face, obscuring everything except for an occasional glimpse of his eyeball.
Nen Abilities
Gallery Fake: Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand
Korutopi's nen ability allows him to create an exact replica of any object he touches. The limitations of his ability is that he cannot copy another nen user's nen (i.e. objects made from nen) or copy life. He can copy a person's body, as demonstrated by the fake bodies he created during the York Shin arc of living Ryodan members. However, the copy will be inanimate, as Korutopi is unable to replicate animate objects. Anything from cards, antiques, or even buildings, all would be faithfully replicated under Kuroro's instruction. The copied object disappears within 24 hours. However, before ceasing to exist, Korutopi can track the movements of each and every replicated object.

Not known to show much emotion, Machi seems to be one of the most cold members of the Genei Ryodan. The only person she has shown some feeling to was Kuroro. Hisoka seems to have an occasional interest with her, although it's hard to see whether it's genuine, given Hisoka's unpredictability. Machi also doesn't appear to be interested a single bit, spurning his advances on all occasions.
Nen Ability: Machi's nen transforms into thin wispy-long threads in which she uses in a variety of ways, including seaming together old wounds to heal them, repairing back dislodged limbs (like what she did for Hisoka), and forming a noose that can strangle enemies with a tug. Her thread's strength is proportional to the length. The longer the thread she makes, the easier it is to break.

Like one of the ronin warriors in Edo period Japan, Nobunaga comes complete with a long Japanese sword that he uses with great finesse and skill. Nobunaga's speciality is the unparalleled use of the sword in executing enemies. His best friend is Uvogin, and the two bring out the best in each other during combat.
Nobunaga's En: Supplementing his swordfighting skills is the use of En in creating a circular boundary that can detect the slightest of movements of his opponents. Once the opponent steps into this boundary, an immediate retaliation can be expected from Nobunaga.

From his appearance, Shalnark seems to be a guileless and normal boy. However, see him in action with the rest of the Genei Ryodan and that thought is dispelled. Shalnark is one of the most intelligent and quick-thinking members in the group--being adept at using the computer and at information gathering, providing the brains behind the brawn. Shalnark is also a Hunter, so he has the ability to gain access to certain information that could be potentially useful in the Genei Ryodan.
Nen Abilities
Black Voice - Mobile Fate Detector Shalnark is able to control the physical movements of any person he has targeted, as long as he has a special antenna on them and that person is not already being controlled. This is done via a cellphone interface in which he remotely controls other people from a distance, while pointing the antenna at one he placed on the person.
Auto Mode: When Shalnark places an antenna on himself, he temporarily gains immense strength. However, he can only control himself through giving himself instructions and cannot withdraw from Auto Mode until he has accomplished the task. After going out of Auto Mode, Shalnark cannot move for two days. He also doesn't retain any memory from what happened in that state.

Shizuku is member number eight in the Genei Ryodan. She has been described as being a natural airhead, seeing as how some of her actions do not point towards her being very bright. Shizuku is quite forgetful. Once she forgets something, she won't remember it. Her opponents are often fooled by her unassuming and blurred appearance--but this has often proved to be fatal for them once she enters in combat. Shizuku is also left handed.
Nen Ability - Deme-chan (Blinky): Shizuku uses her nen to create a self-styled vacuum cleaner she names "Deme-chan" that is able to consume any inanimate matter under her command. This has proven very useful in many occasions for cleaning up evidence that the members leave behind, especially blood and dead corpses. Anything sucked up into her vacuum cleaner cannot be retrieved, except for the last material that was sucked in.

Phinx is a genius when it comes to unarmed combat. Phinx uses his hands in battle, which have been shown to be extremely powerful. Phinx is one of the Genei Ryodan that originated from Ryuuseigai. He seems to get along with Feitan.
Nen Ability - Ripper Cyclotron: Phinx's nen type is reinforcement. His ability involves how many times he winds his arm. The more winds that he does with the arm, the stronger his blow will become.

A sophisticated woman with revealing attire, Pakunoda exudes an air of self-confidence that can be intimidating to others. Pakunoda is fully loyal to Kuroro, and may even go against the Genei Ryodan in order to help him. She is killed by Kurapika's Judgement Chain in order to tell the others about what happened to Kuroro.
Nen Ability - Memory Bomb: For those who know of her nen ability, their fears are well-founded, as Pakunoda is able to read the thoughts of any person or any object she has had contact with. Be it a brief touch or an engaged conversation, Pakunoda is able to draw out secrets kept hidden within the premordial regions of the brain. Attempting to create false memories is impossible, since Pakunoda can only extract the most pure memories. Without a doubt, the private information she has garnered is highly useful in exposing weaknesses and secrets, especially in finding out the opponent's nen ability or in situations requiring some form of extortion or blackmail.
Pakunoda's hidden ability is to shoot her memories into her opponent, using a revolver and special Nen Bullets.

Uvogin is the eleventh member of the Genei Ryodan. Nobunaga has compared his personality to Gon's, seeing how not only do they have the same Nen type, but their behavior is similar as well. However, like all of the Genei Ryodan, Uvogin doesn't hesitate to kill anyone. Out of all of the Genei Ryodan, Uvogin is the strongest in terms of physical power. Although he prefers to fight alone, Uvogin works best when fighting alongside Nobunaga. Uvogin was killed by Kurapika.
Nen Ability: Uvogin has seasoned his nen to the point where he has 100% power in the reinforcement type. He can strengthen his muscles to the point where neither bullets nor missiles will have much of an effect on him, and can strengthen even his vocal cords in order to kill someone internally. His favorite ability is his "Big Bang Impact", where Uvogin focuses all of the aura to his fist and lets loose, creating an impact as powerful as a missile.
