Gendernym

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A gendernym is a word that expresses a concept that is not normally thought to exist in English. In a language in which words are classified by gender, such as Romance or Germanic languages, gendernyms are pairs of words that are applied to masculine and feminine versions of stem words, by adding inflections of suffixes to them to denote the differences.

Examples of this in Spanish are the words 'esposo' and 'esposa', for 'husband ' and 'wife'. In German 'Wirt' and 'Wirtin' apply respectively, to 'landlord' and 'landlady'. English words such as 'husband' and 'wife', could be referred to however, in English too, as gendernyms which seems to have been accepted by some dictionaries.
