Here are some tasks you can do:

I hope you will come to contribute around here, too.

[edit] Vandal

202.27.222.162 (talkcontribslogsblock userblock log) has been blocked for 3 hours. I tried to keep it somewhat short as it is a shared IP address. Keep keeping an eye out and thanks for posting at AIV. Your friendy admin, ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 22:43, 2 April 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Welcome.......to the Welcome committee!

You might want to add a welcome committee userbox to your page, or if you're anti-userbox, just show it by welcoming newbies. I've created a template at {{User:Ikiroid/helpfulpages}} that you can use. There are also multiple welcome templates you can use. Pass on the welcome!--The ikiroid (talk/parler/hablar/paroli/说/話) 23:52, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Anon test edit.

[edit] Film History

Thank you for your invite. I am pretty much a film noir historian, and just added some corrections and additions to the American Mutoscope and Biograph Compnay, an old silent film company's article. I noticed 3 million+ corrections, but there were still some incorrect references, probably oversights. I am also working on others soon.

Thanks, and please feel free to let me know any other information.

DanP101:)

[edit] IP vandalism

Hi GChriss. Thanks for messaging me about this. I don't know if anything's really become of it. You'd probably know if another admin blocked the whole IP range for Penn State. The Vincent Gallo article gets edited by a lot of IPs; you could check to see if the same zealot(s) are still active there. If so, talking to your network security expert might be a good idea. If I come across any persistent vandalism from this IP range again, I'll let you know. Cheers! --Fang Aili 說嗎? 03:27, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikimania :)

Hey there! Glad to see you registered for Wikimania. Are you done with your term yet? I have some questions and thoughts for you; the Harvard cross-dept computing group is getting excited about wikis. How is everything going at Penn [State]? Hope all's well, and send [...]

Cheers, +sj + 20:36, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Hey GChriss, sorry I haven't gotten back to you. Finals week was surprisingly busy for me (my parents came up at the end of the week for the volleyball tournament), so I wasn't able to meet up with you. I'm starting work on Monday so hopefully I'll be able to figure out soon whether or not it's going to be possible for me to get to Wikimania this year. I'll let you know. --Spangineer[es] (háblame) 13:13, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for voting in my RfA!

Taking a moment to say thanks for voting in my RfA! Thanks for the kind words; the nomination didn't gain support but I'm happy to have accepted it! - Amgine 21:00, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Whoa, how did you find me?

Did you look for every Wikipedia page linking to Penn State? I'm just surprised that you found me. I will not be going to Penn State until the fall of 2006, but thanks for the early welcome!

Begreen 18:12, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

I do what I can ;-) GChriss 22:53, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hey GChriss

Glad you like the template I am using for welcoming. Welcoming has been one of my approaches to the community and developing a strong encylcopedia. I find that welcomes with a great deal of information are most useful and generally appear to be most appreciated. I did not create the whole thing, I borrowed parts, not much unlike you are now usig it now. Like everything in wikipedia, none of us own anything. Actually, the fact that we share and collaborate as we do is a major draw for me to work/play here. Thanks for your kind words and for the good work you are doing. Best, -- Kukini 04:08, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Zapata Corporation

I just now saw your comment on my page, about Zapata Corporation. Looks like this article is about to go through lots of focus and discussion. Your input is welcomed! I've suggested that it be split into two articles, one on business and the other on politics. What do you think? (I can see some drawbacks to doing this -- it gets away from the gestalt "whole" connectedness, and it may turn the political one into an outlet for partisan warfare. I fear Wikipedia is heading in that direction, on many topics. *sigh*) Anyway, thanks again for your nice comment, very much appreciated! Eugene Banks 17:48, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Presentation portal on en:wp

Check out Wikipedia:Portal/Proposals... +sj + 05:07, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Now we need an actual portal here, and one on meta. +sj +

[edit] Wikipedia:WikiProject Awareness

You may like to show your involvement in this project with a userbox I've created and saved into my userspace for now. It's likely to change (and indeed you are most welcome to try and improve it), so it's probably best not to subst it for now. The code you need is {{User:Xyrael/Templates/User WikiProject Awareness}}; thanks for your continued interest in this project. --Xyrael T 21:25, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Beaver and Atherton copyvios

I really enjoyed your image gallery, but the problem with these two images is that they exactly reproduce copyrighted text by the Penn State Alumni Society.

I listed both for speedy deletion at Commons. I certainly wouldn't want the Penn State Alumni Association mad at me. Good catch, thanks. RockinRobTalk 04:32, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Traveling to Wikimania

Hi Laurascudder,

I noticed that you are likely driving to Wikimania from Pittsburg. If you are taking I-80, myself and possibly one other Wikipedian are just a short hop along the way, located in State College, PA. I would be willing to split gas costs, so if you are interested just let me know. Thanks! GChriss 17:41, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

I've finally settled on driving from Pittsburgh rather than flying, in which case I'll certainly welcome any company. — Laura Scudder 19:09, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the note....

The reason this come up was that the thought occurred to me "wouldn't it be better if the Communist Party of China participated in wikipedia instead of censoring it" but then I realized that this raises a whole host of issues that aren't limited to China. A lot of the issues in getting the Communist Party of China to somehow participate in Wikipedia are going to be faced in getting the Democratic and Republican Parties to participate in wikipedia.

I think that the solution might be to have "interlocutors." When the US and Chinese governments want to brainstorm, they use someone like members of a think tank that speak for themselves, but have close relations with each government. Interlocutors are useful because what they say is unofficial which gives them freedom to actually say useful things.

I suspect that the solution for companies and governments may be to find interlocutors to communicate with wikipedia. Company A might find someone retired and just ask them to participate in wikipedia. That person would have the freedom to speak for themselves, and nothing they say would be official, but they also have close relations with the companies.

Hey

I went ahead and uploaded Image:Microsoft_logotype.png, is this better? Acdx 19:07, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Perfect! I changed the link in the article as well. GChriss 19:26, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] wikimania template

I love your wikimania template :) nice work. I changed 'thee' to 'the'.. if you did this on purpose, feel free to change it back. cheers, phoebe 05:51, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

I could go either way on 'thee' v. 'the', just stylistic. Glad you like it! GChriss 18:25, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikimania

Yep, I'm definitely interested. I don't think I'll be able to stay on Sunday though—I'm thinking I might be able to get off work on Friday and then drive back on Sunday. A friend of mine is going to be up there then; I'll see what I can figure out, and try to get an estimate on how much this is going to cost me in gas money =). --Spangineer[es] (háblame) 13:51, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Ok, let me know if you need anything. As far as transportation goes, if you are leaving from State College there is a Wikipedian driving through these parts: see a few messages above. GChriss 18:29, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pennsylvania State University Athletics

There seems to be a belief that pages about schools athletic teams should be titled as they are most commonly known as. I think a more logical name for this page would actual be Penn State Nittany Lions. If you check the other Big Ten schools for example they are listed in this manner ie Minnesota Golden Gophers, Ohio State Buckeyes etc. If you are concern about confusion with Nittany Lion a note can be placed at the beginning of the article. however I don't think many people (at least people familar with US college sports teams names will be confused by the title.Smith03 15:48, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Ok, fair enough. In addition to being clearly distinct from Nittany Lion, a reason that I didn't mention was the ability of Pennsylvania State University Athletics to be broader atricle that can encompass sports facilities, IM teams, non-competitive athletics, etc... GChriss 14:29, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Take a look at Minnesota Golden Gophers we have facilities information. As for as IM teams I am not sure that would make anymore sense on Pennsylvania State University Athletics vs PSNL. IMO either term would only mean intercollegitic (sp) teams Smith03 17:04, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Concerning your Portal Proposal

I noticed you proposed Portal:Presenting Wikipedia and it was summarily blocked by those who opposed it. This appears to have been in violation of Wikipedia's policy Wikipedia is not censored. Therefore I've nominated the portal approval process page for deletion. The discussion and voting page can be found at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Portal/Proposals. --Transhumanist 16:13, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

hmm, all I did was fix a typo - just one word. If defamation exists, it wasn't done by me. Thanks Brian 23:40, 16 July 2006 (UTC)btball

Yes, I agree with the point of deleting defamatory / libelous information quickly when we see it and realize it. Thanks for the clarification. (cross-posting here but complete discussion is on my talk page) Brian 00:38, 17 July 2006 (UTC)btball

[edit] Vernon Wells

Howdy, just so you know, I merely formatted what was in this article. I didn't add any additional information. I think I did remove one line that seemed out-of-place. Even though I don't particularly care for the topic, I treated it as objectively as I could. Most of my edits are made for spelling, formatting, punctuation, and such. Personally I think the whole article should be deleted. Schmiteye 23:50, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

[Discussion located here. GChriss 00:24, 17 July 2006 (UTC)]
We're on the same side. Sorry about the rant. I'll do what I can. Schmiteye 02:47, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
Glad to hear! (I really don't mind the rant, but I do worry about awareness of this policy.) Take care, GChriss 02:51, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] No group accounts?

One thing that is interesting is that I can see some use for establishing a convention that there are no group/corporate accounts on wikipedia. There is something that deeply disturbs me about group/corporate accounts, but I can't figure out exactly what it is.

Roadrunner 09:14, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

It is a murky issue, but I would rather have any such editing done in the open. Will ponder. GChriss <always listening><c> 00:32, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] singpost/video of wikimania

i saw your post over at the tipline of the signpost. if you are making available a lot of the video from wikimania, might i suggest putting them on google video as well as the commons. JoeSmack Talk 22:07, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this up -- I hadn't really thought about it. (I will add source, speaker title, and license information to the start of the videos.) I am publishing on the Commons under a GFDL 1.2 / CC-BY 2.5 dual license, both free licenses. Anyone is free to republish on secondary websites, including Google Video. I would upload to Google Video myself, but they don't list Theora as a supported codec, which is the only video format the Commons accepts. I'll give it a try, though. Thanks, GChriss <always listening><c> 22:56, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright problems with Image:BewcastleCross1.jpg & Image:BewcastleCross2.jpg

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I actually got permission from the owners to use them. I'll try to dig up the e-mail and post it at the relevant place. Eixo 16:24, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok, please see this page for instructions. Also note that the image needs to be released under a free license, as a simple permission for republication will not do. What would be really neat is to have the copyright holder post the permission on their website for promotion of CC, GFDL, or PD. Thanks, GChriss <always listening><c> 17:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
I've posted the e-mail on Wikipedia:Successful requests for permission and also sent it to permissions@wikimedia.org. But you're right about the licencing of course. Truth is I did this a while ago, and looking at the e-mail I sent, I realise I didn't make those things clear. I might get back to them. Eixo 11:38, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Done and done. Eixo 14:39, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
