[edit] Zero-byte image

Hello; I just deleted an image you uploaded back in June 2003, because it was zero bytes. It was Image:Al-Aqsa.jpg, and had the caption The Al-Aqsa Mosque (**NOT** the Dome of the Rock). It's quite possible you already re-uploaded it or know about the upload error, but I thought I'd let you know just in case. --Delirium 09:39, Feb 17, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Star and crescent in Islam

[edit] First reaction

As for the symbol, Muslims worship Allah (God), therefor they reject any kind of idol worshipping. We believe that Christians believe in the cross to be a symbol of their God, or the so claimed Son of God. They seek blessing and protection from this cross. Muslims seek protection and blessing only from Allah, that is why we do not have an Islamic symbol as the Christians’ cross. Some Muslims have invented the symbol of a crescent to counter the cross, but this is not authentic and it is considered as an innovation in Islam.

[edit] Second reply

 • First point: why should it be an issue that the site is following the Salafi methodology?
 • Second point: why is it considered to be an 'hardline' methodology?
 • Third point: I can't speak french.
 • Last point: You could use the flag of Saudi-Arabia or the text contained in it.

[edit] License

Hi, could you tell me the license of Image:Trianonhungary.png ? Thanks in advance Tipiac 15:40, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] I am anti-Islamist

The reason I edited your changes to that islamophobia "article" was because the section you wrote was essentially a pro-Islamist diatribe full of half-truths, lies, exaggerations, distortions, etc. It is the classic propaganda technique, put a tiny morsel of truth, and then heap lies upon lies upon lies on top of it to achieve an end. Joseph Goebbels would be proud of you, I'm sure.

My friend, you are an Islamist. Your edit was so pro-Islamist that it screamed out to be deleted, or at least edited. Of course, you've probably reverted the article or something now, and those goddamn Islamist-stooges over there won't care one way or the other as long as the POV is unabashedly pro-Islamist. Do what you want, I won't be back to that article, it is infested with Islamists and their "useful idiots".

--B Sveen, November 30, 2004, Anno Domini (in the year of Our Lord)

How can I be an Islamist when I'm not even Muslim?! Anyway, in the first paragraph I was mainly concerned with toning down language. I also mentioned how the Crusades were a reaction to the initial Islamic conquests. It only makes sense to call my edits here biased if you are equate the defence of Israel with the defence of the West itself.
About the paragraph I added suggesting that Islam could be destroyed only by genocide (and which you distorted in one of your own edits) - can you name any countries where de-Islamization by forced conversion (as opposed to ethnic cleansing or genocide) has been successful? I know of none...

[edit] Trianon

Hi there, could I have whatever materials you used to create the Trianon image of Hungary's break-up? I would like to improve upon it If I may. Nicholas 16:18, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Image licensing

Hi! Thanks for uploading Image:Draka42.png and Image:Draka48.png. I notice they currently don't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know their copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release each under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you.

If you uploaded other images, please clarify copyright for them as well, otherwise the images will eventually be deleted.

Thanks, Denni 01:39, 2004 Dec 13 (UTC)

[edit] Islamophobia

I really like your version of the Islamophobia-article and just reverted the article back to that version. I'll make a few (mostly minor) changes today and tomorrow. Let's discuss them in the Islamophobia talk page if there is anything you disagree to. 207.44.192.52

Please notice that I removed some text in the "Islamophobia and Racism". The claim that Muslims can't be converted and Islam can only destroyed through genocide is simply not true. In the Philippines millions of Muslims was converted to Christianity by the Spanish, and today millions of Iranians and Algerians are leaving Islam. Another fact is that well-known anti-islamists like Ali Sina believe that Islam can and will be defeated through Muslims leaving Islam. 207.44.192.52
I would describe Ali Sina as "Anti-Muslim" not "Anti-Islamist". I define "Islamism" as "support for Sharia" so an "anti-Islamist" is someone who supports secular laws in Muslim countries, such as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. GCarty 18:03, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mount Erebus disaster

Please don't cut and paste to move pages. It messes up the page history. You should ask for admin assistance if you have difficulties. -- FP <talk><edits> 09:01, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

I used cut and paste because the redirect at Air New Zealand Flight 901 had a past edit history, making a conventional move impossible. GCarty 15:00, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
In that case, you should have asked for admin help. It is very important to keep the page history intact (as you have already been told). In any case, I asked SlimVirgin for help, and the histories have been merged. Best wishes -- FP <talk><edits> 02:59, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Interlingua

Good idea, there. Thanks from me (a diehard interlinguist)! Almafeta 13:39, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi there! Yes I did look at Interlingua some time ago, but I felt too much temptation to indroduce a full Romance grammar! I had my own inter-Romanic experiment once - the obligatory Lord's Prayer follows in my lashed-up language. What do you think?
Nostro padre que é en le cielo
Santificado seja tu nome.
Venga tu Reino.
Amen.
The other point is using vocabulary at odds with Romance practice - such as using attaccos rather than attentatos to refer to terrorist attacks, or to use the horribly laboured charpa de capite (seen on INTERLNG) rather than pannello de collo or even hijab (which seems international enough to me). One addition to the vocabulary I'd like to introduce - can I call a puppet government "un governamento fantoche"? (FR/ES/PT fantoche, IT fantoccio) GCarty 14:22, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Two questions re your own inter-Romance tongue: what does the x (laixes) mean?
It's pronounced "lashes" - the orthography is Catalan-inspired. It's a subjuctive of "to let" (cf. French tu laisses, Italian lasci) GCarty 16:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
My own tastes find it odd, because of the the way that the possessive adjective nostro sounds, but that's me.
And what do the accents mean -- stress change, or sound change?
Accents function as in Spanish. GCarty 16:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Also note that Interlingua didn't intend to be purely Romantic, although I sometimes replace Interlingua's verb rules with a faux-Romantic set to make it sound like an obscure European tongue.
Finally, regarding "fantoche": French uses fantoche, but Spanish uses títere -- if the interwiki links on puppet state are correct. For now, I'd keep it, but add the parola-non-official template to the top of the article. Almafeta 15:11, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
"Títere" is more common, but "Fantoche" is sometimes used too, at least if a Google search is anything to go by. GCarty 16:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
Also, feel free to get your own account there! Almafeta 15:15, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Friendly suggestions

Hi GCarty, I would just like to remind you to always leave an edit summary when making changes to articles. It really helps your fellow editors and only takes a few seconds.

The problem is that when I am changing categories for dozens of articles those "few seconds" add up! Are there any programs for changing categories in articles en masse, so that I don't omit edit summaries for "fast-fingered freddie" reasons? GCarty 19:15, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I would also like to suggest that the minor edit tag might not be appropriate when you are deleting and adding categories in the article. It is really intended for minor changes such as fixing a spelling mistake. Best wishes -- FP <talk><edits> 02:30, July 26, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dinosaur cat

I noticed you've put Category:Dinosaurs into Category:Prehistoric animals. This seems redundant to me because it's already in Category:Prehistoric reptiles, which is itself in Category:Prehistoric animals. If there's some pressing reason why it needs to be in both the parent and child cat then let me know (should probably note it on the Talk page actually), otherwise it seems pointless. Soo 16:18, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Some people regard dinosaurs as reptiles, while others regard them as a unique class of animals, with both reptilian and avian characteristics. I put Category:Dinosaurs into both Category:Prehistoric animals and Category:Prehistoric reptiles in order to accommodate both these viewpoints. GCarty 17:20, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Executed secret agent Doihara

I'd reverted your edit [1] Doihara was executed but not as or because of being secret agent. Please try to use categories only for most important things/features and check whether they really apply. TIA Pavel Vozenilek 00:41, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] CFD redirects

Please don't use hard redirects in categories. There is a bug in the mediawiki software which causes these to work incorrectly. There is more information about this at Wikipedia:Categorization#Redirected_categories If a soft direct is necessary, use target category. Most times, though, if you are working on the cleanup section of WP:CFD, the soft directs are there so a bot will move the articles, so nothing needs to be done. --Kbdank71 15:41, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Battle of Tours

whatever your faith, please do not vandalize the name of Emir Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi Abd al Rahman, or remove his name from the list of dead -- his life was sufficiently important in history that he deserved to be mentioned in the list of those killed. Your edits are ill-informed, hopefully you don't know better. If you do edit, please leave an explanation. Otherwise, as in this one, it is simply reverted. old windy bear 21:50, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

I assume that you are not aware of the conventions for battleboxes - a dagger (†) beside a commander's name indicates he was killed in the battle. GCarty 08:30, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
no problem, however, you should have left a message in discussion, and his name still belongs in the causalty lists, as he was quite renowned in history -- most users do not know that the dagger indicates death in battle, and the information in the battlebox shows them at once that a significant personality of the times was killed. I had removed the dagger again, till i came here and read why, i then restored it, but left the Emir's name in the losses - which is also appropriate. I have been working on these articles for a year. I welcome any help, but don't know what someone is doing - like with the dagger - if they don't tell me, which is why I suggested leaving a note in discussion on any article when such is done. Cheers!old windy bear 09:53, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

GCarty I understood and agreed with your edit this morning returning the category to the proper place, since Tours took place during the great period of Islamic expansion, during their wars of conquest. But Carty, please, leave a note in discussion so that the guy whose edit you changed understands why! I started to do so, but decided instead to come back here, and ask you to. Your edit was historically correct, but people generally on these history articles explain such an edit, so the other party understands. You were correct on the dagger -- I did not know (Palmdogg is the battle and campaign box king; i compile the lists! -- but now that I do, all is well). But please, for the sake of avoiding editing wars, leave the guy an explanation on the discussion page? It also establishs that you know what you are doing, which you obviously do. This is not being smart with you, but an honest request to leave an explanation so the person who thought -- because Tours was a victory for the Chirstian forces opposing the Islamic Conquest, that it was not a part of the wars in that era -- understands that they were wrong. Thanks! old windy bear 17:10, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

GCarty Carty, you have still not explained your revert of an edit a user made in good faith, not understanding the nature of the battlebox, or why the person who thought -- because Tours was a victory for the Chirstian forces opposing the Islamic Conquest, that it was not a part of the wars in that era -- understands that they were wrong. If you don't start leaving an explanation, one that is sourced, your edits will be reverted. In this case, I happen to agree with you. But wikipedia rules dictate that when you revert - as you did with this -that you leave an explanation in the discussion area, so the person understands the logic of the revert, or leave such in the revert itself. You did neither. Please post it, or I will revert yours, and let the military project coordinator decide the matter. You are simply acting without any respect towards users editing in good faith. Please leave explanations!old windy bear 18:46, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

GCarty 1) the Battle of Tours is generally regarded as the turning point of the Muslim invasions of Western Europe, but it is not the end of them, as you would know if you studied the life of Charles Martel, or the Islamic Conquests -- invading forces were turned back again at River Berre and Narbonne by Charles Martel in 736-7; 2) the Muslim conquering presence in western Europe did not fully end until the retaking of the City of Narbonne by Charle's son, Pippin the Short. I reinstated the explanation placed at the Battle of Tours. if you feel this is wrong, feel free to discuss it on the explanation page, or talk to user:Kirill the project coordinator for the Military Project. In any event, your history was incorrect that Tours signaled the end of Muslim invasions of Europe, though western historians, and Muslim historians of that era, regarded it as the "turning point" of said invasions.old windy bear 15:08, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Corporate-jet conservative

I so wish you would delete that. The article is total POV-bait. Besides, it's not at all an established term, and may even be a good AfD target if it's not that widely used. Finally, Conason is plain wrong. Statistics from the last U.S. election showed (I don't have a source) that people with net worths of $ 1 to 10 M voted about 2:1 for Bush, and people with net worths of $ 10 M + voted about 2:1 for Kerry. I realize that "limousine liberal" has a big juicy article, but that is an established term and can't be glossed over. I probably won't nominate your article for AfD, and certainly will not do it until you've had a chance to substantially expand it, but I fervently wish you volunteered to delete the article for the above reasons. - the.crazy.russian (T) (C) (E) 19:55, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

I've decided that it's worthwhile as an entry in List of political epithets, but not as an article in its own right (Will Beback nominated it for deletion). Is this a reasonable compromise? GCarty 09:18, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] They've killed the List of famous failures in science and engineering! You Bastards!!

Mmx1 is taking the fight that I have over the F-14 and F-111 to the failure page, and he has nominated them for deletion. The wiki-thugs are all voting to delete the page. Mmx1 has reversed the F-14 page to state that it is not, and has never been designed as a maneuverable air superiority fighter, and is not accepting any contrary citations up to and including a F-14 test pilot, Janes Defence, and Aviation Week. He is apparently taking revenge against other pages. Please go to the deletion page and tell the administrators what is going on. Look at the patterns of MMx. He regular accuses others of gross misinformation and summarily reverts most edits as a self-appointed judge of all truth, but in fact should not be allowed this leeway. --matador300 11:03, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Anti-Islam activists

Greetings GCarty, Although I don't see that you've done so previously, I wanted to give you a friendly note to suggest not adding the likes of Ayaan Hirsi Ali to this category. Anyone who does is very likely to encounter resistance in regards to the whole category. Cheers. Netscott 14:48, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

I believe I understand why you've been encountering resistance to your utilization of this category and it is due to what seems to be a blanket utilization of it. There are those who are anti-Islam activists like Ali Sina but then there are those who are anti-Islamist (or ism) activists like Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Might I suggest making Category:Anti-Islamism activists? or Category:Anti-Islamist activists? Cheers. (Netscott) 18:58, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
