Gay cruising in Canada

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gay cruising describes the act of searching a public place in pursuit of a sex partner. Cruising differs from prostitution (in that the parties involved do not seek money for sex) and from gay nightclubs or bathhouses (in that the activity does not usually occur in premises designed for that activity). Records show that established gay cruising grounds have existed in Canada at least since the 1920s [1].

The 1970s saw increased crackdowns on gay cruising in public areas in Canada but also increased activism aimed at countering the harassment of gays and lesbians [2].

Various laws are occasionally used to crack down on cruising in public parks. In Vancouver, for example, current park by-laws state that no person shall occupy a public park between the hours of 10pm and 6am [3].

Bushes and trees have been cleared in some areas to create less privacy for those engaging in public sex.

Pink Triangle Press, the Canadian non-profit that publishes the Xtra! gay newspapers, operates squirt.org, an Internet portal for gay male cruisers popular in Canada and abroad.
