Gavin Shoesmith is an Australian musician who rose to fame as bass guitarist in the John Butler Trio.
Shoesmith left the Trio to pursue a song writing career and to focus on his love of the double bass. He initially formed an organic dance music band called Katamaran, based in Darwin. Alongside Shoesmith on double bass, the band comprised Mark Hoffman on didgeridoo and Grant Smith on percussion. In its one year of existence, Katamaran sold around 5,000 CDs.
Shoesmith's current band is The Groovesmith, in which he plays double bass with Jason McGann on drums and Tim Scanlan; the music can be described as bass-driven roots music.
