Gato Fedorento
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gato Fedorento (pron. IPA: ['gatu fɨdu'ɾẽtu]; Eng. Smelly Cat) is a famous Portuguese comedy program formerly broadcasted on SIC Radical and currently on RTP. This show is composed of gags acted by the four authors, the comedians Zé Diogo Quintela, Miguel Góis, Ricardo de Araújo Pereira and Tiago Dores (respectively from left to right on the image to the right).
Its success comes from the authors' use of an intelligent, clean humour, rejecting the vulgarity of most of the comedy scene, and never mentioning real events or persons. It is quite inspired by Monty Python, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Big Train etc.
Gato Fedorento has had five seasons so far: the Fonseca Series, the Meireles Series and the Barbosa Series (broadcasted on SIC Radical). The fourth season, named Lopes da Silva and the fifth serie "Diz que é uma Espécie de Magázine".
Season names are meant to represent very typical Portuguese last names and when chosen for a season, the name is used as a last name for every single character on the show. This has become a trademark of "Gato Fedorento"
[edit] History
The four authors of the program met at the Portuguese comedy company Produções Fictícias (Fictitious Productions) and worked with comedians like Herman José (in HermanSIC) and later with Maria Rueff (in O Programa da Maria).
The history of Gato Fedorento itself started in April 2003, when the four authors got together again to create an (still available) Blog. When they were deciding how to name their blog, they chose to name it after the song Smelly Cat, from the soundtrack of Friends, which translates as Gato Fedorento in Portuguese.
After some time, Ricardo Araújo Pereira and Zé Diogo Quintela were invited to make some gags for the show O Perfeito Anormal (The Perfect Dork). Their success in that role led the then director of SIC Radical, Francisco Penim, to extend them an invitation to create their own show. They were joined by Tiago Dores and Miguel Góis, thus starting the show.
The group has released a DVD with the Fonseca season and performed live all over Portugal, making a huge success. In late 2005 they released another DVD with the Meireles season. The first three seasons still air on SIC Radical, as reruns. However, the group is no longer affiliated with this TV station, due to a contractual disagreement with SIC.
Months later the fourth season, Lopes da Silva, premiered March 24, 2006 on RTP with a relative success (in Portuguese).
[edit] Most recent work
Since 29 October 2006, the group started the "Diz que é uma Espécie de Magazine" ("Say it's Somekind of a Magazine"), a talkshow-like program where they talk with the audience and show sketches they create to mock the hottest news of the week. Usually they invite an artist to sing in the end of the show, and there is always an invited actor, whose name is José Fred. Tiago Dores is always leaving the show to then return.
Episodes of DQÉUEDM (shows only the title and why is it called like that. There were plenty more sketches in Diz Que É Uma Espécie De Magazine)
1 : A Estreia Espectacular da Espécie de Estupidez (The Spectacular Beginning of the Somewhat Stupidity)- The first episode of DQÉUEDM.
2 : A Anarquia Anormal da Actuação Arquitectada (The Nerd Anarquy of the Planed Act)- For the first time, the group makes an editing of an enterview, mocking with Alberto João Jardim, president of the Regional Government of Madeira.
3 : A Vergonha Verdadeira da Veloz Varejeira (The True Shame of the Fast Horsefly)- In the last episode, Ricardo Araújo Pereira wanted to talk about horseflies. Now, he finally made the invited band to sing about the horseflies.
4 : O Lado Lambrego do Livro do Lopes (The Hillbilly Side of Lopes's Book)- Saturday the 18th, one day before the show. The group hadn't any idea for this episode, and they were about to cancel it when someone appeared and told that former prime-minister Pedro Santana Lopes had released his book. The group suddenly became happier and, in the middle of the fourth episode, they show a sketch where, mocking Santana Lopes' claims that there was a conspiracy to remove him from office, they manipulated voice and images and acted as Pedro Santana Lopes telling that, since the first moon landing, Jorge Sampaio, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Cavaco Silva, George W. Bush and even Neil Armstrong were conspiring against him.
5 : A Triste Trafulha do Tubarão Topado (The Sad Chaos of the Catched Shark)- In this week, an enormous basking shark and the group played three fishermen (Ricardo, Tiago and Zé) who were telling that the basking shark was caught by them, and one reporter (Miguel)who was enterviewing them. The show also featured Tiago Dores having a quick sex operation, wich made the rest of the group say thinks like: "Let's cumpliment ourselves with our «Toma Lá, Dá Cá» cumpliment!"(Zé), or "Tiago, in Spain men can marry each other. Would you like to..."(Miguel), or even "Tiago, come and sit on me to the rest of the show!"(Ricardo)
6 : A Maquiavélica Mania Muçulmana da Maldição (The Maquiavelic Muzlim Paranoia about Curses)- In the week of the Pope's visit to Turkey, four Turks looking at a papal speech on a TV set always finding a way to misunderstanding him.
- EX:
- P- I wish the creation of a Bridge of Friendship between Turkey and Rome!
- T- "You wish a Bridge"? Are Muslims only needed to work??)
The show also featured the presentation of a magnificent DVD. Because the Lopes da Silva Series DVD was published, everyone assumed that the misterious DVD was the series' - but it was actually "O Que Para Aqui Vai Chicha 7"("What Goes Here Meat 7"), a porn DVD.
7 : A Catástrofe Cultural das Crónicas de Carolina (The Cultural Disaster of Carolina's Chronicles) - In this week, Carolina Salgado publishes her book about her and Pinto da Costa, named "Eu, Carolina". Gato Fedorento decided to spend the first 5 minutes of their show to read some hilarious parts of the book. The musical guests were Moonspell, who sung Noddy's theme song with a gothic touch and then showed hanged Noddy toys.
