[edit] History
[edit] The Golden Years
Although it never has managed to compete with the much larger Kirkwood Mall, Gateway Mall has seen far better days. At its prime, nearly every space was filled, and the mall was anchored by Sears, Herberger's, and Menards (after the closing of White Mart).
[edit] Vacancy
Thrifty White began closing its White Mart operations in the late 1980s, making way for Menards to take its place in the mall. Menards left the mall just a couple years ago upon building its own facility, and the location was turned into a clinic. Herbergers left after expanding its much busier Kirkwood location, leaving a large department store vacant. Over the years this spot has seen retailers come and go. For some time it was occupied by World's Greatest Deals (previously called Jacob's). Radioshack recently announced it will be closing its Gateway location.
[edit] Food Court
Gateway Mall once featured a large, diverse food court, with a Subway, Orange Julius, Taco Tina's, and Papa D's Pizza. All but Subway have left the mall. Located outside the food court is a Rockin 50's Cafe.
[edit] Movie Theater
At the time it opened, the movie theater at Gateway Mall, Midco 8, was the largest in the city. The theater still remains today, and now competes solely with nearby Grand Theaters. The theater is now owned by Carmike Cinemas.
[edit] Gateway to Science Center
For many years, the Gateway to Science Center had a location inside the center of the mall. This store allowed visitors to try various science-related activities and experiments. The Gateway to Science Center recently moved to a new location outside the mall.
[edit] Gateway Mall Today
Over the past three years, the mall has been sold three times. Gateway often cannot compete with the much larger Kirkwood Mall and has a hard time keeping its tenants. It is currently anchored by Conlin's Furniture and Sears. There is also a clinic located in the previous Menards location.
[edit] Mid-Dakota Clinic
At the time Menards left the mall, there was already a large anchor sitting empty. The mall partnered with Mid-Dakota Clinic, demolished the former Menards location and added a large clinic in its place.
