Gatanela
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gatanela is a rare Philippine family name, being used only by few Filipinos.
Compared to common Filipino family names, such as de la Cruz, Rodriguez, Flores, Aquino, Tan, Sy, and other familiar Spanish and Chinese family names, the name "Gatanela" is few and far between. So rare the family name was that a search at databases and websites in the Philippines indicate that Gatanela is almost an extinct name.
For instance, there are many Filipino doctors, engineers, architects, nurses, lawyers, and other professionals who go by the family name of "de la Cruz", "Lopez", "Reyes", "Santos", or "Villanueva" and other common family names.
Yet, this does not hold true for the family name "Gatanela". Research from the Philippine Board of Dentistry and the listing of dentists do not have a Gatanela dentist. This is also true in the medical profession: there is no doctor by the name of Gatanela.
It was believed by those who have "Gatanela" as family name that the name was of Spanish origin, the Philippines being under the colonial rule of Spain from 1561 to 1989.
However, a study of Spanish literature and records in the Philippines does not support the claim. It may be that the word "Gatanela" was of ethnic origin.
