From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaspereau (Lat. 45:04N, Long. 64:21W) is a village about 3 km south of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada on the Gaspereau River. Commonly, Gaspereau refers to the entire Gaspereau Valley, about 15 km long, which is a side valley of the Annapolis Valley.

The name comes from the Gaspereau fish, Alosa pseudoharengus, which migrates up the river every spring. The fishing of Gaspereau has been important to human settlement of the Gaspereau Valley for thousands of years. When the Acadians came here around 1680, they named the fish and the area, Gaspereau. There is still a commercial fishery for Gaspereau in the river.

Gaspereau is primarily a farming community, with dairy farms and apple orchards. In recent years many grape vineyards have been established and there is now a large winery in the village. The Gaspereau River is also known for its tubing, using an iter-tube and floating down through the beautiful river.
