From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Garland V. Stewart Middle Magnet School, normally referred to as "Stewart", originally opened as Don Thompson Vocational High School in 1945 on West Spruce Street in Tampa, Florida. The Building later housed Blake Highschool before becoming Stewart. The school is named in honor of Garland V. Stewart, the first African American to serve as Assistant Superintendent for the School District of Hillsborough County. Stewart currently has approximately 950 students in grades 6-8.
[edit] Special Programs
- Stewart is a NASA Explorer School, one of only 50 in the United States, and only two in Florida. The school receives over $3000 in grant money each year from NASA, along with visits and video conferences with NASA engineers. NASA provides summer workshops for Stewart's teachers.
- Project Lead The Way is a pre-engineering program that allows students to use advanced CAD (Computer-Aided Drafting) software and a woodshop. These students are picked based on Math and Science Teacher recommendations. The computer portion of the course currently runs Autodesk Inventor 8.
- John Glenn Top Gun Academy is a club for all grades that caters to advanced aerospace-interested students. The club's members take an annual trip to the Kennedy Space Center, paid for by donors such as Brighthouse Networks and KB Home.
- Wheelbrator is an environmental studies club. The club takes full advantage of Stewart's prime position on the Hillsborough River.
- Young Eagles Stewart shares a special relationship with the Tampa chapter of the Young Eagles Association. The Young Eagles group provides opportunities for Stewart Students to ride in small aircraft. One Stewart Teacher owns his own airplane and participates in these activities.
