The Charter Township of Garfield is a charter township in Grand Traverse County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 13,840 at the 2000 census.

The township is adjacent to Traverse City on the southwest, and the city has incorporated much of land that was formerly part of the township. Much of the remaining township is considered to be a part of the city's urban area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 71.7 km² (27.7 mi²). 69.1 km² (26.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it (3.54%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 13,840 people, 5,745 households, and 3,544 families residing in the township. The population density was 200.2/km² (518.5/mi²). There were 6,150 housing units at an average density of 89.0/km² (230.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.34% White, 0.33% African American, 1.01% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.50% of the population.

There were 5,745 households out of which 27.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the township the population was spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 82.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $37,472, and the median income for a family was $50,307. Males had a median income of $36,002 versus $24,421 for females. The per capita income for the township was $22,142. About 4.0% of families and 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.5% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over.
