Garfield (character)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Garfield is a fictional character (and the principal character) in the Jim Davis comic strip Garfield. He is a lazy, overweight, orange, anthropomorphic tabby cat (with bare feet) who enjoys eating, sleeping, stealing Jon's meals (especially donuts), and tormenting Odie by kicking him off the table. He hates Mondays because he suffers bad luck on those days and considers himself to be more intelligent than humans, dogs, or animals. He also enjoys entertaining (or annoying) an unseen neighboring audience on top of a fence in the middle of the night (and gets bombarded by various objects by the agitated audience for it). He hates spiders, and often swats them with a rolled up newspaper (or whatever may be close to paw). One of his talents is walking on ceilings, which he says it's because of his sharp claws.

[edit] History
Garfield was born in the kitchen of Mama Leone's Italian Restaurant and developed a taste for lasagna the day he was born. Ever since then, it has always been his favorite food. According to his grandfather, he was born five pounds, six ounces ("that's big for a kitten"); surprisingly enough, he managed to fit in a tiny bed. Later in his life, Garfield runs across his Mother again one Christmas Eve, accidentally, and meets his Grandfather for the first time. According to the TV special Garfield Gets a Life, in the end of the episode, Jon’s car is shown driving away and his vehicle registration plate says Indiana on it, indicating that Garfield lives in Indiana. Jim Davis added this in possibly because he is from Indiana. In his cartoon appearances, Garfield usually causes mischief in every episode. In June 1983, comic strips introduced Garfield's alter-ego, Amoeba Man, yet he was only shown in 6 strips (6-20 through 6-25). Amoeba Man is only one of his few imaginary alter egos though. The Caped Avenger is one of the more common ones. It was revealed on 01 July, 1983 that he doesn’t like raisins.[1] His birthday is 1978-06-19.[2][3][4] Garfield frequently gets into many adventures, such as getting stuck in roll-up blinds, sparring with mice, and getting locked up in animal shelters.
[edit] Eating
Garfield always eats ravenously and usually is seen eating generic wet cat food. He also loves to snack on canaries ("you can't eat just one canary!"), goldfish, and Jon's house plants ( especially ferns, but Jon got him with a cactus once, and also enjoys messing around in Jon's flower garden in the backyard outside. His favorite food above all other things is Lasagna, as he developed a taste for it ever since he was born and has become infamous for his love towards it.
Garfield hates raisins and spinach and refuses to eat mice ("Show me a good mouser, and I'll show you a cat with bad breath"), and has befriended several of them. The only instance of him eating mice happened when he ate a fake birthday cake which contained a female mouse, unaware it was a prop cake that someone was supposed to pop out of in burlesque fashion (he promptly spat her out). It has been implied that raisins are his least favourite food. In a comic strip where Garfield saves time by instead of making a list of things he wants for his birthday, he makes a list of things he doesn’t want. The only thing on the list was raisins.
[edit] Other media
In the animated series and prime-time specials, he was voiced by Lorenzo Music. In the live-action movies, he is voiced by Bill Murray.
[edit] Trivia
- According to the strips, Garfield first stood on just two feet on May 17, 1981[1]. However, this contradicts some of the earlier strips. For example, he is shown tap dancing on Jon's head in the strip for May 6, 1979[2]. Also, in the strip for September 16, 1979, Garfield sleepwalks away on two feet[3].
- Interestingly, Lorenzo Music and Bill Murray played the animated and live-action versions of Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters, respectively. The same happened with Garfield as well.
- When Jon went to buy a pet, the choice came down to him choosing either Garfield or an Iguana and a pet rock.
- According to a possible sypnosis for Garfield The Third, Garfield's full name may be Garfield III.
