Saint Germain-en-Laye is the main railway station serving the royal city of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The station opened on 14 August 1847, 20 years after the opening of the ligne de Saint Germain (from Paris to Saint-Germain), using athmospheric railway. Twelve years later, conventionnal locomotives replaced the athmospheric powered engines. The station was originally a rich and impressive building, a large veranda building stood above the terminating lines.

In 1960, Paris metro company, the RATP, decided to buy the rail line and all its stations in order to create a new rapid network, the RER. Works begun on July 6th, 1961 and the new service started on 1 October 1971. On 9 December 1977 the new trains link St Germain to and through Paris and was integrated in RER's line A, where it is currently the terminus of the A1 branch.
