Garden of Eden Creation Kit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Garden of Eden Creation Kit is a MacGuffin-like device in the computer game series Fallout. It is mentioned as an advertisement in the back of the first game's manual, and is the tool the main character in the second game seeks.
The size of a small briefcase, the Garden of Eden Creation Kit was a device intended for those who had survived World War III in the isolated "Vaults". Actually more of a deconstruction device, the materials contained in the GECK would, ideally, be used be in conjunction with materials stored inside the Vaults themselves.
The following tools and equipment are believed to be in a GECK:
- Fertilizer
- Seeds
- Chemicals that could detoxify radiation-tainted soil
- Cold fusion power source (to be used by the Vault power plant)
- Force field schematics
- Chemicals which could aid in the production of primitive buildings out of sand
- Clothing (although some believe that this was simply an "unlock code" allowing Vault suit-creators to fabricate other forms of clothing)
[edit] GECK as a miracle device
It is interesting to note that the primary mission of the Fallout 2 main character is to retrieve a Garden of Eden Creation Kit, believing that it will save their primitive tribal society from ruin. Having problems with crops withering and cattle dying, the elders of the society look at the GECK as a literal Eden creator. In this respect, the main character's journey is little more than a fool's errand.
Regardless of how it would play out in reality, the GECK does manage to miraculously save the main character's tribal town. The final screen of the village shows a nearly modern and fertile town, leading players to assume that the abilities of the GECK are much more than a simple "briefcase of seeds." This may be because the Fallout series views the world from a stereotypically 1950s viewpoint, in which technology can always solve even the grandest of problems.
