Garden City, Texas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Garden City is a town located in Glasscock County, Texas, United States. As of the 1990 census, the town had a population of 293. It is the county seat of Glasscock County.

The Garden City post office was established in a store in 1886, and a settlement began around this anchor. The post office was to be named Gardner City after the store proprietor, Mr. Gardner, but was misspelled.

In 1893 most of the buildings were moved just over a mile to a settlement called New California, which had won the voting for the Glasscock county seat, and the County Commissioners renamed this new site Garden City.

The area, as is much of West Texas, is conducive to wind power generation, and several windmill farms have been proposed for the area.

[edit] Education

Garden City is served by the Glasscock County Independent School District.
