I don't think we have ever elected a non-admin there, it takes a few months to become well known and liked around here, and by the time you do, adminship is likely yours for the asking, so it's not too surprising, and doesn't mean much. You may want to read this subpage of mine that I wrote a few months ago. Cheers, NoSeptember 00:20, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

On the real issues (content of articles), admins have no extra power, and if you try to exercise admin power without good reason you get shot down quick (see WP:ANI), so I think the image of power is just a image, it is really much more of a community consensus thing. NoSeptember 00:33, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Of the 7 people leading in the election, about half of them became admins in just the past month or two, and all but one of them in 2006. This organization is being run by relatively new people, it probably takes a full year for an admin to go corrupt ;). NoSeptember 00:51, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Star Wars newsletter

Project updates
Greetings, Star Wars editors! Deckiller here. It's the first edition of the WikiProject Star Wars newsletter, and yes, it's a semi-ripoff of the Esperenza newsletter. I think it's important to begin with some good news: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and Jabba the Hutt have reached featured article status! Kudos to the editors who helped obtain these achievements!

WikiProject Star Wars is also on a mission to improve Star Wars articles using the following ideas:

  • An out of universe perspective versus an in universe perspective (see Wikipedia:Writing about fiction and the future ammendments to our manual of style)
  • Evolving lists into regular articles
  • Moving excess information and specifics to Wookieepedia (and providing links to Wookieepedia per the "see also" and/or "external links" sections)
  • Enhanced communication amongst WikiProject members
  • More to come

These should provide the basic steps needed to improve and "encyclopedia-fy" the Star Wars series of articles.

Things to do
There are plenty of Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Wars/things to do. An update to the page is coming very soon, and it will represent the new and exciting changes that Star Wars pages will be receiving!
Out-of-universe versus in-universe perspectives
Although details are forthcoming, I would like to take this time to explain the gist of this concept. Wikipedia has generally agreed that fictional articles should write about the topic from a "real world" perspective, focusing on real world issues and topics, with a section or two for plot synopsis and so on. Jabba the Hutt is a solid character example, and Clone Wars (Star Wars) is quickly moving toward an out of universe perspective.
Article evolution

As many of you know, lists of minor Star Wars-related themes are very common on Wikipedia; however, since these may be seen as violations of Wikipedia policy (and having seperate articles would breach even more policies), the tentative solution is to create general articles on a list's topic (for example, turning List of Star Wars devices into Technology of Star Wars, which allows us to cover everything from hyperspace to comlinks in a general encyclopedic fashion). This can be very tough for some broad topics, so the key is organization. I encourage all editors to list their ideas on the WikiProject talk page. It will be a very difficult — but tangible — effort.

For an example, let me point you to the Final Fantasy WikiProject. Some of us over at that WikiProject decided to turn various components of Final Fantasy X, such as Pyreflies, Yevon, and the backstory — into an article describing the world of Spira. Location descriptions were given a List of locations in Spira article, and the details themselves were placed on the Spira (Final Fantasy X) page. This is a decent template to follow — however, we will need to place priority on out-of-universe, "real life" topics and perspectives in realtion to the article.

Sounds confusing, eh? It won't, for examples will be popping up left and right in the near future!

Signed...

I like the article. Never knew such a gun existed :) However, it is quite heavy on lists, and I think people will remove it if I try to feature it on DYK. Could you convert the lists in prose with full sentences? - Mgm|(talk) 08:33, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

There's one more image mislabeled as web-screenshot: Image:Nicerdicer.jpg. Please remember that the tag is for screenshots of an entire website and doesn't apply to images taken from a website. And if an image is copyrighted, you need to describe why it's fair use. Thanks. Ytny 11:42, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Cornershot-antitank.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Cornershot-antitank.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 19:05, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I wanted to let you know that I've added missing source and fair use information for the images you uploaded. You didn't complete the Template:Fairusein tag and you need to provide more specific source information, like exactly where you got the image and which image you are using. Also, you still need to provide detailed fair use rationale for those images.
I realize it's tedious but them's the rules. Ytny 14:07, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Actually, the licenses were fine before you changed them. Fairusein tag was fine - you just needed a fair use rationale. The "promotional" tag isn't meant for pictures on websites - they're for pictures that come with press kits and specifically marked for promotional use.
For this article, I would just keep one that best represents CornerShot, delete all the rest and write a detailed fair use rational for the one you end up keeping.
But again, thanks for going through the trouble. Ytny 19:56, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Python

Where/how did you learn Python? Please respond on my page, thank you. GangstaEB (sliding logs~dive logs) 21:48, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I couldn't say exactly how I learned it. When you know as many programming languages as I do (20+), picking up a new language is easy -- mostly a matter of finding a reference for the language's standard library, so you know how to get the language to do things more complex than simple math and logic. --Carnildo 19:21, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Heh, Carnildo is exactly correct, once you know a lot of other programming languages it's very easy to pick up another, just find the API documentation. Once you've been programming for awhile you know how to do everything you need to do; dealing with specific languages your only issue is, "I want to do X, but I don't know how to do it in this language" ... and then a reference manual answers the question. Since you don't know any programming languages yet, you may want to start off with a language that is easier to learn. --Cyde↔Weys 19:24, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

1. - should I change the section "Cured Vandals" on the clinic to include my name, and should we add a doctor/counselor section to the page? And should you or I list a few simple tips on the page?

2. Also- has anything significant been done to publisize the clinc in the wikipedian community or would you like me to publisize it somehow?

[edit] Why NOT to vandalize Wikipedia- for vandals!

Vandals- I implore you to read this- it is not the conventional anti-vandal campaign found in other areas of the site. This is real talk from someone that used to be a vandal himself-

First I acknoledge that from the viewpoint of a vandal there may seem to be some initial pleasure in vandalizing because:

You feel it is prank-like towards others
You feel the need to cause note-worthy trouble to some one in a way that you cannot be held implicitly accountable for.
You feel enjoyment due to the fact that you are disrupting others work.

I myself used to vandalize for these very reasons, and I have come to and understanding that it is pointless. I do not wish to speak to you about morals as doubtless you have heard many times before, but here, simply, is why I have turned from the path of vandalism:

Wikipedia is useful!- Take a moment to think about this. What other research resource exists in the world where one is able to look-up a topic- and with the click of a mouse, explore any term regarding your original topic that you do not understand. Seriously think about that. When researching in a library, or even on a regular internet search engine, the misunderstanding of a single word or term within an article can lead to hours of further research before even continuing the original article. That however is not the case on Wikipedia.
People work hard on Wikipedia!- I know I said I wouldn't talk morals here, but I'll keep it practical. There are many many users here on wikipedia. Some spend hours on end editting the site, while others do what they can during thier free time. Regardless, all that are here work hard when they can. There should be some hesitance in diriving pleasure from disrupting the work of others.
Wikipedia is here for YOU!- That's right. This sight is here for you to use! Research from it- find out anything practiacl from it- contribute to it. Wikipedia exists for the use of the public- and for thier good. With the vastness of toppics covered within the site, it would be challenging to never once find it of some use to you.

I hope these things have at least somewhat changed your thinking. If not, and you are still somehow willing to change your ways, please contact me on my talk page.If yes though, here are a few things I would like to say to you-

Why not make a fresh start on wikipedia? I did- right your wrongs- It doesn't have to be one-on-one, but perhapse on your talk page just say this- hey I'm sorry for what I've done and what i caused- and it's over now.
Contribute to the site- find a topic that you are passionate about and go wild- within wikipedia policies of course, but go wild! You can do a lot of good by just adding to an article you are interested in- many people will find it usefull no matter how obscure it is.
Last but not least, become part of the Wikipedian community- There are hundreds of groups here- religions, political parties, literature interest, nationalities- you name it! Talk to those how are like you- express yourself through these groups and work together with thier members for the good of the site.

Well I hope what I have said would trun a vandal like might be reading this into some one interested in being possitive towards the site- things like this certainly changed me. Please, fell free to comment on this or request me help- I would love nothing more than to assist you-

[edit] Perl

Where/how did you learn it? GangstaEB (sliding logs~dive logs) 01:52, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

When I was a student researcher at the MIT Media Lab, my boss gave me a data processing project, and suggested that teaching myself Perl might be a useful way to solve it. So I did. It also came in handy for all sorts of system administration hacking, as well as AI projects for classes I was taking. I've taken a number of jobs since then that involve making web pages, and I've continued using Perl and learning its more arcane details and using a wider variety of CPAN modules. -- Beland 14:23, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
