Gank
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gank is a slang word. Its most general meaning is as a jocular word for a theft. The theft does not have to be anything more than, say, taking a snack you weren't supposed to, but it could also refer to something as large as stealing a car.
Amongst other definitions, Gank has also been used as a slang term for theft by force. The term was popularized in gangster rap lyrics of the late 1980s such as N.W.A's "Thugs 4 Life", in which Eric "Eazy-E" Wright states "Gankers got the fake but you can get the real(...)".
Gank is also used in relation to Player vs. Player games where a group of 2 or more people gang up and kill another player, especially if they have an unfair advantage over the person being killed, and is an abbreviation for Gang Kill. Popularised by the MMORPG Ultima Online, it is now often used in any situation where the person being killed is at a significant disadvantage to the person killing, as in "That jerk just ganked me!". The term has evolved in MMORPGs so that a player can be "ganked" by one other player if that other player is of such significantly higher level that the ganked player has no realistic chance to beat the ganker, or even escape with his life, regardless of skill.
Gank as used in the MMORPG Ragnarok Online refers to a passive skill available to Rogue-class characters. It allows the player to occasionally automatically steal an item from a monster during combat.
Gank is also a word used in online first-person shooters to refer to when a player sneaks up behind other players and kills them with a knife or other mêlée weapon. This is also often called "shank." In this case, one is taking another's life.
Gank is also a term for taking someone else's source code or blog content and reusing it to fit one's own purposes. For example, it is common for people to go to a website with Javascript code and copy and paste the source into their own webpages with minor changes. This likely came from the 'theft-by-force' definition, but could possibly be a contraction of Grab and yANK.
Gank can be slang for something of a distasteful or unpleasant nature. Usage "That rotten tree is gank."
