Gamershare

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gamershare is a Video Game trading service based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, founded by Sidney Price. The beta release of the website, which allows users to legally trade and swap Video Games, opened up to the public in July 2006. The concept behind the service is similar to that of Peerflix, except physical Video Games for game consoles and handheld game consoles are exchanged instead of DVDs. Users pay $1.99 per trade (includes shipping costs for disc only) for Gamershare to facilitate the trading through their website.

The service works similarly to that of GameFly, but Gamershare does not have or need distribution centers as all trading is done between users of the service. Users trade the game discs or cartridges they own with or without the original packaging. Users receive trading units called “GamePoints”, a virtual currency assigned to each game according to how recently it was released. Users earn GamePoints by mailing games to other participants who then redeem their points to order games for themselves. One criticism of the service is that not enough information is available on the condition of each game so users are left to rely on a leap of faith that the game(s) will arrive in a playable condition as requested.

Some of the initial features of the Gamershare trading service include:

• Your GameBox - Advanced queue system for members to manage their video game want and have lists.
• GameShield - Trade protection program that insures each video game against loss, damage, theft or incorrect shipment.
• GameFeeds - RSS content for all of the personalized information available on the network.
• The Hot 50 - Most traded video games on the Gamershare network.
• Most Wanted - Most requested video games on the Gamershare network.
• Coming Soon - Most anticipated unreleased video games from the major publishers and developers.
• The Predictor - Recommendations just for you by comparing similar likes and dislikes of other members.

Gamershare is a privately held corporation and the service can be used for free during the beta release.
