Gamer widow
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A gamer widow is a term for those who have a relationship with a gamer (one who plays video games, be it on a console or on the computer) who pays more attention to the game than to their partner. It is similar in concept to the football widow.
Variations of the term include game widow and gaming widow.
Most gamer widows are attached to players of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). Because many of these games revolve around building or "leveling up" a player character, many hours are dedicated to this process while playing the game. Examples of MMORPGs include EverQuest, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Ultima Online, Final Fantasy XI, City of Heroes and Ragnarok Online. Other games such as CounterStrike, StarCraft and Civilization III, often known for their addictive qualities, also result in their fair share of gamer widows.
There are a few support groups that exist for loved ones of addicted gamers, most notably for the two most popular MMORPGs, Everquest (EQ) and World of Warcraft (WoW). EQ Widows is a Yahoo! group email list created in 2000 and is very popular among gamer widows. WoW Widows is another Yahoo! group email [1] list that started in early 2005.
GamerWidow.com is a website dedicated to the support of gamer widows and widowers of a variety of different games, including World of Warcraft and Everquest.
