Galway West

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Galway West parliamentary constituency spans the entire area of the western half of the Connacht county, in the heart of the Gaeltacht, taking in the towns of Galway City, Clifden and many other areas. The constituency has an electorate of 82,213 and at present is served by 5 Teachtaí Dála (TDs). The method of election is proportional representation. The constituency contains the Galway Galetacht, but is largely an urban constituency, and becoming increasingly more so. Since 1987, it has been represented by one candidate from Labour, the Progressive Democrats and Fine Gael, and 2 candidates from Fianna Fáil. The constituency has been a very weak one for Fine Gael in the past. The current Mayor of Galway, Niall Ó Brolcháin, is the first Green Mayor of Galway, and is a TD for the Irish Green Party in 2007.

The most high profile TD from the constituency is the current Minister for Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív.
