[edit] History
"The Tribesmen" as Galway United are known won the FAI Cup in 1991, and Football League of Ireland Cup in 1985-86 and 1996-97. The clubs best league finish to date was runners up to Shamrock Rovers in 1985-86. They were First Division champions in 1992-93, runners-up in 1999 and won the First Division Shield in 1992-93 and 1996-97.
Some legendary players over they years have graced the famous Maroon Jersey and the hallowed turf of Terryland Park. One of Galways most famous footballing sons is Eamonn "Chick" Deacy. Eamonn was considered a local journeyman player, but through sheer persistence and dedication he convinced Aston Villa F.C. to give him a trial which led to five successful seasons with the club. During his time with Villa, Eamonn won a League Medal during their successful 1980-81 Championship winning season.
The year 2006 looked hopeful for United but a title-challenging year ended sadly as the team failed on the final hurdle.Four players were chosen in the First Division team of the year(Raffael Cretaro,Ciaran Foley,Conor Gethins & Derek O'Brien).Plans were also unveiled for a new stand at Terryland Park. The club is also hopeful of gaining a place in the new FAI Premiership.
