Gadabuursi

The Gadabuursi (or Sheik Samaroon) tribe is a northern Somali clan, a sub-clan of the Dir. The Gadabuursi are descendants of Sheikh Samaroon, who suffered a devastating defeat while defending the Gadabuursi's ancestral homeland of Amuud against Amharic invaders from Ethiopia in 1432 AD.[citation needed] Recent archaeological excavations suggest up to 50,000 homes were destroyed.

According to Adal legends, Imam Said Samaroon, the founder of the Gadabuursi clan, was a famous general in the army of Amuud Region of Somalia he was known expansionist ideology against Christian Ethiopia ever since they co-existed.((Fact)

Today they live mostly in northern Somalia, Ethiopia, southern Somalia (as the Mandaluug), and Djibouti.

Politically they are represented by the Somali Democratic Alliance (SDA). The current President of self-declared republic of Somaliland is from Gadabuursi. Also the Gadabuursi are the second largest Somali ethnic group in Djibouti where the Dir Isaas are the majority.

As one of the Dir subclans, Gadabuursi are ethnically related to the Issa of Djibouti,the Suure ( Abdalle and Qubeys central/Southern Somalia), the Bimaal of southern Somalia,Gadsan, Gurgure and the Isaaq of northern Somalia. Gadabuursi are also the second largest somali ethnic group in ethopia.


The Gadabuursi-clan is divided in three main subclans.

  2. Makaahiil
  3. Habar Afaan
