Gacko

Gacko (Cyrillic: Гацко) is a town and municipality by the same name in southeastern Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated in the Foča Region.

The town is in a short distance from Montenegro. The municipality covers an area of 736 km², making it one of the larger municipalities in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

According to the 1910 census, the absolute majority in the Gacko municipality were Orthodox Christians (64.03%). But in the city itself Bosniaks were the absolute majority.
In 1991 the population of the municipality was 10,844, including:
- Serbs (62.38%) (See: Serbs of Bosnia and Herzegovina)
- Muslims by nationality (35.32%)
- Yugoslavs (0.77%)
- Croats (0.27%) (See: Croats of Bosnia and Herzegovina)
- others (1.25%)
The town itself had 4,878 inhabitants, including:
- Muslims by nationality (49%)
- Serbs (48%)
- Yugoslavs (2%)
- Croats (1%)
- others (2%)
During the 1992-1995 Bosnian War the municipality was ethnically cleansed of non-Serbs. Today only a small number of Bosniaks (formerly Muslims by nationality), have returned and the majority of the population is Serbian.

There is a thermoelectric powerplant in the municipality, which is the main employer and staple of the economy.
