Gabumon is a fictional character in the first series of the Digimon anime. He is a reptile-type Digimon and Matt's Digimon partner in the Digimon Adventure continuity. Gabumon is always seen wearing a blue fur pelt, which he does not like removing; he did remove it once but he was only seen in shadow.[1] He was voiced by Kirk Thornton (English) & Mayumi Yamaguchi (Japan). Gabumon's name is probably derived from gabugabu, a Japanese onomatopoeia for guzzling.

[edit] Description

Gabumon's official art sheet

Gabumon is a yellow-skinned reptile-like Digimon about 2½ feet tall, although the 10 or so inch long horn atop his head increases his height. This horn, yellow just like his skin, has markings reminiscent of electric circuitry. His tail is normally held in a semi-erect position and has regularly-spaced bumps on its top. While most of his back is normally covered by his fur pelt, it can be assumed that these bumps continue up to the top of his head. Gabumon's belly is sky blue, with symmetric pink motives. Gabumon's eyes are red and, although it is covered up, his muzzle is lizard-like.

Most of Gabumon's body is covered by a pale blue dog-like pelt with royal blue tiger-like markings, which are perfectly symmetric. Additional black markings surround the eyeholes. This is actually the pelt of a Garurumon, albeit a small one. Gabumon's horn goes through a hole at the top of the pelt's head. Four teeth are also attached to each side of pelt's muzzle, and three violet claws to the end of each limb. Handles are present inside the forelimbs; Gabumon's hands are usually wrapped around them to keep the pelt in place.[2]

Gabumon's viral form is white-skinned, with a black horn, yellow belly and white marking. His pelt is black with white markings and extra as well as longer teeth on it. His eyes are orange.

When modified by the X Antibody, the markings on Gabumon's belly become less elaborate, and the parts of his body not covered by the pelt become more dog-like - he has a dog-like nose rather than a lizard-like one, and a bushy-looking tail. The pelt also only covers one arm, and it ends in hooked claws.

[edit] Digivolution

Gabumon's normal evolution line, as seen through Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, is:

Gabumon also has the power (at least for the last part of the first season and the second half of the second season) to Warp Digivolve directly from the Rookie to the Mega level.

In the Digimon card game and other games, however, Gabumon may variously evolve to any of Angemon, Boarmon, Centarumon, Chuchidarumon, DarkLizardmon, Dobermon, ExVeemon, Frigimon, Fugamon, Greymon, Gururumon, Kabuterimon, Kenkimon, Kyuubimon, Leomon, Nefertimon, Snimon, Turuiemon, Veedramon, Vegiemon and Wizardmon.

[edit] Attacks

The only attack Gabumon ever uses in Adventure is "Blue Blaster" ("Petit Fire" in the original). He doesn't use Horn Attack until his cameo appearance in Frontier.

  • Blue Blaster (Petit Fire): Gabumon releases a stream of blue ice-like flames from his mouth.
  • Horn Attack (Little Horn): Gabumon attacks with the horn on his head.

The following attacks are only found in the cards and video games:

  • Blue Cyclone: Spins around while shooting short-ranged icy flames.
  • Machine Gun Jab
  • Thunder Slam
  • Combination Buster
  • Crush Nail
  • Hidden Knock
  • Skull Cracker: Drops down on enemies with his horn

The following attack is exclusive to Gabumon X:

  • Petit Fire Hook

[edit] Appearances

[edit] Digimon Adventure

Tsunomon permanently Digivolved to Gabumon to protect Matt from Kuwagamon and later to Garurumon when an irate Seadramon attacked them. Since then, he became Matt's partner, always willing to follow him no matter what out of friendship. Gabumon has a mellow and rather "cool" attitude toward life. After Devimon scattered the kids over the fragments of File Island, Gabumon and his partner ended up in a wintry area. After Matt suffered hypothermia, Gabumon had to remove his pelt to keep the boy warm, the only occasion where he ever did so. Following the dispersion of the groups that ensued from Tai's disappearance, Gabumon remained with Matt through the period where they helped Joe and Gomamon at Digitamamon's diner. Shortly after, Gabumon Digivolved to WereGarurumon for the first time when Matt's crest glowed.

Gabumon came back to the real world during the Myotismon story arc, and first Digivolved to his Mega form of MetalGarurumon during the DigiDestined's final battle with the villain. He returned to the Digital World with everyone to battle the Dark Masters. He was with his partner when Matt, tricked by Cherrymon into fighting Tai, left the team in a search for himself. As MetalGarurumon, he defeated Puppetmon and accompanied Matt on his self-searching quest. Despite his efforts, he could not convince his partner that he was an important part of the team, and Matt was trapped by his feelings of despair. He eventually shook it off after Gabumon actually bit him and they promised to be "friends for life". Eventually, they both participated in the battles against Piedmon and Apocalymon.

In March of 2000, Gabumon had to travel in the internet with Matt, Tai and Agumon to battle Infermon. Once there, both Digimon, even though in their Mega forms, were defeated by the numerous copies the evil Digimon made of himself after evolving in his Mega form of Diaboromon. Thanks to energy provided by thousands of cheering mails, the two Digimon DNA-Digivolved into Omnimon. These events are recounted in the second digimon movie.

One year after their adventure, Matt and Gabumon were reunited, only for Matt to give up his Crest power to free the Sovereigns. As a result, Gabumon lost the ability to become WereGarurumon or MetalGarurumon.

[edit] Digimon Adventure 02

Two years later, when the Digimon Emperor was conquering the Digital World, Gabumon and several Gazimon escaped from the Emperor's prison, only for him to the get the beating of his life from RedVegiemon. He was thrown over a cliff and left for dead, but Matt got a message on his Digivice and, with the second team, they liberated the area and destroyed the Control Spire. Later, Gabumon, Tentomon and Agumon lit a stream of oil under the Emperor's flying base, providing a distraction that allowed the 02 group to sneak inside.

During the Christmas Invasion, the boost from Azulongmon's Digi-Core restored Gabumon's ability to evolve past Champion level. Gabumon traveled to Mexico with Matt, Ken and Wormmon to round up Digimon in an Aztec temple, but the next day, during the battle with SkullSatamon of the Daemon Corps, the strain of being in the real world got to Gabumon and the others and they had to return, but not before sacrificing the energy to go to Ultimate in order to power up Imperialdramon to Fighter Mode. He was later seen sealing the gate at Highton View Terrace and in the final battle against MaloMyotismon.

3 months after the end of 02, Gabumon, Agumon and their partners had to return in the Internet and face Diaboromon again. Apparently, the Digimon's ability to go past Champion was somehow since been restored. Unfortunately, when defeated, he divided into millions of Kuramon that subsequently entered the real world. Omnimon was defeated by the newly evolved Armageddemon. Upon the Mega's devolution, energy was liberated in the form of a Holy Ring that enabled Imperialdramon to change into his Paladin Mode and defeat the menace. These events form the plot of the Second Adventure 02 movie.

Many years later, Gabumon became an astronaut, along with Matt, and they became the first digimon and human, respectively, to land on Mars (although their original destination was the Moon).

[edit] V-Tamer

Gabo was a Gabumon who lived at Holy Angel Castle. He found Taichi Yagami while being chased by a Tortomon and took him to see HolyAngemon. Since then, Gabo traveled with Taichi. Gabo is easily stressed, a side-effect of being very knowledgeable about different Digimon and the Digital World. Compared to Taichi and Zeromaru's easygoing attitude, he is a complete worrywart.

[edit] Digimon Frontier

  • A Tsunomon at Togemon's school became a Gabumon during a soccer match with the other children, which was why the other students did not like Tsunomon. That problem was revealed when Gabumon appeared in the lake and prevented Zoe from drowning. When a flood threatened the school and Kapurimon fell in, Tsunomon Digivolved to Gabumon and saved him so the other students liked him again. This Gabumon was voiced by Kumiko Yokote in Japan and Kirk Thornton reprised his role in the U.S..
  • Another Gabumon appeared at the Autumn Leaf Fair during the DigiDestined's first visit.

[edit] Digimon World 2

Gabumon can be found in the wild and digivolves to Centarumon, Drimogemon, NiseDrimogemon or Garurumon depending on its DP.

[edit] Digimon World DS

Gabumon evolves from Tsunomon, and can evolve further into Garurumon depending on its stats.

[edit] Digimon Racing

Gabumon is a playable character.

[edit] Digimon Rumble Arena

Gabumon is a playable character, he can warp digivolve into MetalGarurumon.

[edit] Trivia

  • Due to the appearance of his "Blue Blaster" attack (In early dub episodes, a water splashing sound was mistakenly added to the soundtrack when he used it) and the possibility for him to evolve to Chuchidarumon or Frigimon, it is sometimes assumed that Gabumon is a cold-based Digimon, although no proof from the anime supports this assertion. Gabumon's "Blue Blaster" attack has been seen to start fires on at least two occasions.
  • Gabumon's pelt is composed of Garurumon fur obtained from data remnants since Gabumon longs to be a Garurumon [4]. Gabumon is extremely wary of removing his pelt, and only does so once in the series, to keep his partner warm after he gets lost in a snowstorm.[1]
  • Because of the general shape, one can assume that Gabumon may look similar to Agumon without his pelt.

  2. ^ The visible presence of these handles is erratic during the series, but Gabumon's hands are almost always drawn curled around something.
  3. ^ Despite the existence of several ways to "evolve" beyond Mega level, the result is only a more powerful Mega level Digimon, not a new level
