Gabriela, the much loved daughter of long-time Forrester maid Helen, was orphaned when her mother died in a car accident with Stephanie (Susan Flannery) while Gaby was touring Stanford. A devastated Gaby soon learned that her mother had a number of debts and she had been left penniless. Stephanie offered to help Gaby out by paying for college, but Gaby refused. She and Stephanie found a happy medium when Stephanie offered her a job at Forrester Creations as her personal assistant, and accommodation in the Forrester mansion.

Gaby wasn't alone in her grief though, as she soon became good friends with Stephanie's grandson Thomas Forrester (Drew Tyler Bell), both of them sharing the pain of losing their mothers. She was the first person Thomas told about his plans to become a fashion designer at Forrester. They became close very quickly, which Thomas' then-girlfriend, Caitlin (Kayla Ewell), was unhappy about, especially after she caught Gaby giving Thomas an innocent kiss on the cheek after Thomas told her that his mother, Taylor (Hunter Tylo), was actually still alive. Thomas soon broke it off with Caitlin.

Just as things were finally starting to get better for Gaby, her world was shattered when she learned (while working on her college application) that her mother was not a legal citizen and, therefore, neither was she. Gaby was grateful to Thomas when he offered to find a way to help her out. Thomas offered to marry her, and although Gaby was reluctant at first, she eventually agreed and they eloped to Las Vegas, where they were almost caught by Nick (Jack Wagner) and Bridget (Ashley Jones), who were also there to tie the knot.

The newlyweds returned to Los Angeles and soon Ridge (Ronn Moss) and Taylor found out about their marriage. Ridge was furious, but Taylor wanted to give the couple a chance. This caused tension in Ridge and Taylor's marriage, with Ridge soon moving out. Taylor let Gaby stay with them on one condition - that she and Thomas didn't sleep together. At first the couple intended to keep their promise to Taylor, but ultimately the temptation became too strong and they consummated their marriage. Thomas' sister, Phoebe (Addison Hoover), who blamed Gaby for the problems in her parents' marriage, found them out when she discovered a condom wrapper in the hall. The next morning she told Taylor, who immediately called immigration to deport Gaby. The immigration department arrived to take Gaby away, but Gaby's lawyer arrived in time to stop them.

Sally Spectra (Darlene Conley) offered Thomas a job as a designer at Spectra Couture, as well as a place for him and Gaby to stay. Sally, Thorne (Winsor Harmon), Darla (Schae Harrison) and Clarke (Daniel McVicar) were a lot more supportive of Thomas and Gaby than Thomas' family. Ridge challenged Thomas to a fashion competition, Forrester vs Spectra. If Forrester won, Thomas would be forced to annull his marriage to Gaby; if Spectra won, Ridge would welcome Gaby into the family. Thomas agreed, and both he and Ridge thought they would win.

Unfortunately for Thomas, Forrester won the competition. Gaby was ready to be deported, but Taylor then shocked her by announcing that she had pulled some strings, enabling Gaby to stay in the country, on the condition that she ended the marriage. Gaby happily agreed and she and Thomas agreed to part as friends. Gaby supposedly left town afterwards.
