Gabriel Fielding

Gabriel Fielding (1916-1986), pseudonym of Alan Gabriel Barnsley, was a British novelist whose works include: 'Brotherly Love, In the Time of Greenbloom, The Birthday King, Through Streets Broad and Narrow, Eight Days, Gentlemen in Their Season, New Queens for Old, Pretty Doll Houses, The Women of Guinea Lane and 28 Poems.'


Alan Gabriel Barnsley 1916-1986 Barnsley (Gabriel Fielding) graduated M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. from St. George's Hospital, London, in 1943. His medical practice included general practice in Kent, and part-time practice at Her Majesty's Prison, Maidstone, from 1952 through 1964. In 1966 he was Author-in-Residence at Washington State University, in Pullman, Washington where he then became a full professor of English literature He retired in 1981 as professor emeritus. In 1964 he was awarded the W.H. Smith Award for The Birthday King, and in 1967 Gonzaga University conferred upon him a Doctorate of Literature. His pseudonym, Gabriel Fielding, derives from his ancestor Henry Fielding.

He is survived by: his wife Edwina Barnsley of Bellingham, Washington; sons Michael Barnsley of Canberra Australia; Jonathan Barnsley of Melbourne Australia; Mario Simon Barnsley of Croyden, England and daughter Gabriel Vorenkamp of Bellingham, Washington. Felicity Morris, daughter, of Eatonville Washington is deceased (1998).
