Gaahl is the vocalist for the Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth. He joined the band in 1998. Gaahl was first heard on the 1998 Nuclear Blast Album Destroyer, however he only sung on the title track.
Gaahl was also briefly interviewed for the 2005 documentary Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. He gives commentary on the events in Norway in the early 90s as well as the freedom that Satanism brings.[1]
He is also in black metal bands Gaahlskagg (with Gorgoroth live guitarist Skagg), Trelldom, and Sigfader (also with Skagg)[citation needed]
In 2006, Gaahl was sentenced to 14 months in prison for assaulting a man and threatening to drink his blood in 2002. He was also forced to pay the victim a total of 10,000 NOK.
