Gümüşhane Province is a province in north Turkey, bordering Bayburt to the east, Trabzon to the north, Giresun and Erzincan to the west. It covers an area of 6,575 km² and has a population of 186,953 (2000 census). Its name is translated literally from the Greek Argyroupolis, Gümüş (αργυρός), meaning silver, and hane (πόλης) meaning city. This name is derived from the rich bronze and silver deposits of the Pontic Alps that the city is built near. The city has a rich mining history and was the source of exports for Trapezounda. The ancient Greek name of the city was Thera (Θήρα) meaning, gate or doorway.
