[edit] Basic plot
The Universe of the four gods, in disrepair, is taken off the shelves of the library to be recycled and falls off the cart unnoticed. A young girl, Mayo, who plays on the basketball team that Taka and Keisuke coach notices it and takes it home with her. Mayo is in love with her coach Taka, but he, of course, only has eyes for his fiancée, Miaka. She witnesses Miaka and Taka's wedding and is depressed and bitter, even when she catches Miaka's bouquet.
Feeling sorry for herself and not liking her life, Mayo opens the book and the entire story is shown to her within a few seconds. She is so fascinated that she wakes up thinking that it wasn't a dream and that she was meant to have the book because the story is not yet over. Miaka finds out she is pregnant with Taka's baby, and is overjoyed.
After doing poorly in basketball practice, Mayo is followed by Keisuke, who tries to encourage her. Instead, she opens the book and is drawn into it. She ends up in Konan, with Miaka's baby now inside her, and Miaka's wedding ring now on her finger. She is accepted as the next priestess of Suzaku, and tells them lies about her and Taka being together. In the real world, Miaka passes out, her baby gone.
In the hospital, Keisuke tells Taka what happened and he decides to go back into the book in order to rescue Mayo. Once he arrives, he learns of Mayo's lies, and of her feelings for him. He lets her know there is no chance of anything between them, but Mayo just gets angry and more determined to be the Priestess.
Taka learns of the destruction of the land, and agrees to gather the other Suzaku seven to help save them. He must not only find the living soldiers, but also, the reincarnations of the ones who died. He first finds Chichiri. The two fall into a hole in the ground, but they are rescued by their old friend Tasuki. Meanwhile, Mayo is drawn to the Suzaku shrine by a phoenix. There, a false Suzaku tells her to channel her hate into helping him destroy the suzaku seven.
Taka and the others journey on to find the other 4 members of the suzaku seven, who have each been reborn as children. They find Chiriko is a baby (son of a politician) who still remembers his past life, and can speak to them. However, he is quickly becoming a normal baby. They travel on and find Mitsukake as a young boy, with his love Shouka living in the household as an adoptee. They take the boy with them, but are soon forced to go back to the house when he disappears. He was running back to help Shouka, who was attacked and sick. He uses his powers and is able to heal her, thus regaining his memories.
Next, they go to a small town and are greeted by Nuriko, as a little girl. She takes them to go see her friend. This friend happens to be Hotohori as a small boy. He lives on the borders where the Kutou soldiers had attacked and killed many people, and visits their graves every day. The group had been attacked throughout their journey by fake representations of the four gods. They defeated each one, though.
Having found all the warriors, Taiiskun shows up and makes them all appear in front of her. She informs them that the Suzaku Shinzaho, that Miaka and Taka had created with their love is in danger and that they must hurry back to the palace. At the palace, Mayo is depressed after finding out she was used by a fake Suzaku, and because she felt guilty for acting so badly. She is attacked by the fake Suzaku and flickers in and out, starting to disappear. She decides to drown herself in the river. Taka shows up just in time to save her, and the Shinzaho, which is Miaka's baby. They gather to wait for Nuriko and Hotohori's awakening so they can summon Suzaku. They find out that Miaka had sent her baby with Mayo to save Konan, since she couldn't go herself.
Mayo ends up disappearing, as does Miaka in the real world. The creature posing as Suzaku, tries to destroy the land, and the destruction keeps up with the disrepair of the book in the real world. When all seems hopeless, Miaka appears and starts summoning suzaku, along with Mayo. Suzaku appears and through Taka, destroys the impostor. Taka returns to the real world with a wiser Mayo, and Miaka wakes up. Miaka gives birth to a baby girl and names her Hikari.
