Furshlugginer is one of several words made up by the original writers of MAD Magazine. "Furshlugginer" is an adjective with as many possible meanings as the user deems necessary. Often used in a negative sense (ex: "You furshlugginer robot! Can't you do anything right?"), it came into almost-popular usage in the late Seventies and early Eighties by those seeking a more gonzo state of consciousness.

The word may have Germanic or Yiddish connotations. It is roughly homophonous to the German adjective "verschlagen", meaning devious, shifty or wily. The prefix "ver-", or "far-" in Yiddish, is a negative modifier to the word it precedes.
