In the fictional nation of Alera, most people have the ability to command element-linked Furies.

The novel centers around the exploits of a young Steadholder hamed Tavi, who seems to lack any such ability; and a newly graduated Cursor - a messenger and spy - named Amara. Amara commands Furies linked to the element of air.
