Funny Games is the announced American remake of the 1997 Austrian thriller of the same name. Original writer/director Michael Haneke (Cache and La Pianiste) is attached as director and Australian actress Naomi Watts is currently in negotiations to take over the role of Anne originally played by Susanne Lothar and Tim Roth to play George. The two malevolent young men are to be played by Brady Corbet and Michael Pitt. The projected American release date is probably some time in late 2007.

[edit] Controversy

Haneke is a rather vocal critic of what he sees as a prevailing falseness and superficiality in the American cinema. Additionally, like many of Haneke's films the original Funny Games contains scenes of disturbing, implied violence, antisocial behavior, and is anchored by a postmodern disregard for the hallmarks of traditional cinema — all of which are unlikely to whet the appetite of the American moviegoing public. To many critics and admirers, the announcement that Haneke was to remake one of his most revered films in America came as a surprise. The Haneke camp is divided; some convinced that the outspoken and uncompromising auteur has caved into the Hollywood powerhouse, while others believe this is merely a means for Haneke to bring his method and rhetoric to the mainstream.
