[edit] Paradoxical Question

Consider this:

A girl buys one of those "stop genocide in Sudan" t-shirts off a charity internet site because she really wants to help the victims of the horrible genocide. She spends her (10)$, and wears the shirt to school a few times.

Her 3 best friends see her wearing the shirt one day and think that the shirts are a great idea for a good cause. Another (30)$ honestly spent towards helping others.

Weeks later, the girls are sitting in the cafeteria and see a group of preppy kids saunter by, each wearing their own pink "stop genocide" T's. (50)$.

In a few days, everyone in their school is sporting their own "genocide" T in personalized colors. It has become the new fad, and people care less that their money goes to a charity. They're only following the new trend. Half of them don't even know what "genocide" is. (5,000)$

Now here is the question:

Who is morally "right" in this situation? Is it the kids that are really caring for their fellow humans, or the kids that are blindly shelling out money to follow the new fashion trend? Is the real question of morality "Who has the best intentions?" or is the question "Who shelled out the most cash to help the victims?" Does the ends justify the means???

Some kid put this answer on my discussion page, and seeing as it's pretty much brilliant and completely pwns me in life... here we go:

i would've said pixies and yo la tengo/yeah yeah yeahs. also, x = xiu xiu.

besides, on a slightly different tangent, how would merely purchasing a shirt really help (otherwise, the girl could've just donated money without receiving a shirt) anyway? does compensation take away the altruism of the act -- or is it even coercion to offer incentives for something supposedly purely voluntary and selfless? seeing as the goal of spreading the true message on a higher, more involved level was not exactly achieved, the promotion of the charity could be translated to a form of advertising or pressure; the shirts a tool of attracting money.

if the precise success of the charity is measured in solely monetary means, then it wouldn't matter the motivations behind the donation anyway, because ultimately the money is what it is. however, the true aim of the greater realization of the message about prevention, social action, and human nature, etc. fails, as genocide is trivialized into a mere trend. the ethics of economics often are quite muddled. does the overall impact outweigh the rest? yes, if you're machiavelli. the ends does justify the means, as per utilitarianism (to which i subscribe). but in this case, personal/individual morality perhaps might not have an overwhelming role anyway, as the ignorance of the others is more or less harmless in the grand scheme. so maybe it's not quite a paradoxical question. a probably better situation would have been if the donations of the "preppy kids" had a tangibly disadvantageous or especially 'immoral' effect, which it might indeed, but i fail to recognize it. still, that would pretty much piss me off if that actually happened [see: the ONE bracelets].

blah blah blah

moreover, the more important question is that if electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons? obvs
