Fritz Scheel

Fritz Scheel was a German conductor. In 1900 he was appointed the first music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He conducted rehearsals in German, and played mostly German music. After its first season, he fired half the musicians and replaced them with European players. He continued to conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra until his death in 1907.
