Frithuwold of Surrey

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frithuwold (or more correctly FriĆ¾uwold) was a Mercian sub-king of Surrey in England.

He has been generally accepted as having reigned in Surrey probably from Chertsey between 666-675. Nothing is known of his life apart that he was baptised in 675 and had a son named Frithuric (aka FriĆ¾uric) who probably succeeded him. In the 8th century, his kingdom was brought under direct Mercian rule and it is thought that then this royal line came to an end. However, he is largely known from a doubtful charter dated 675 [1]; and a further undated charter [2] is probably spurious. "It seems likely that we have here a native ruler" (Fryde & others 1986).
