Fring

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

fring is a native mVoIP (mobile VoIP) network founded by veterans from the mobile and internet industries. It is the first peer-to-peer VoIP solution specifically conceived and designed for the mobile domain. fring provides peer-to-peer mVoIP allowing users to make free calls over mobile and cellular networks.

fringsters are people who use the service to call or chat to other fringsters or users of computer-based VoIP services such as Skype and GoogleTalk.

[edit] History

fring was originally developed as a cost-saving offering for mobile operators. The developers then shifted their focus and applied the mVoIP technology platform to a new service for the end-user: free mobile VoIP.

Following more than two years of development, the fring beta service was first made available to selected users in September and publicly launched in October 2006.

[edit] Features

fring enables free calls and chat over users’ regular handset internet connections on their existing data plan. fringsters pay their current cellular operator for their existing data plan and use the Internet connection to speak from their mobile phone. Completely PC independent, it requires no additional hardware and has no location limitations (e.g. a WiFi hotspot).

fring also integrates the Skype and GoogleTalk networks so users can make Skype and GoogleTalk calls from their mobile phone on any mobile network or via SkypeOut.

It provides blanket network access and continuous call connection using 3G over mobile phone networks, with optional home or office auto-WiFi connectivity for users with WiFi enabled handsets (e.g. Nokia N90).

This multi-patent pending native mVoIP solution uses a proprietary adaptive protocol which optimizes itself to network capabilities and characteristics. This enabled the developers to build a very small client with minimum network requirements, allowing full duplex high quality user experience with minimal battery and memory consumption.
