Friendly Center
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Friendly Center is a large, open-air shopping center located in northwestern Greensboro, North Carolina, at the intersection of Wendover Avenue and Friendly Avenue opened in 1958. With its unusual sector design, Friendly Center is essentially an outdoor lifestyle center. Its anchor tenants include Belk, Macy's and Sears. Other tenants include a Harris Teeter (62,561 sq. ft.) supermarket, a K&W Cafeteria, a 16-screen multiplex cinema operated by Consolidated Theatres of Charlotte, and a number of national retailers such as Old Navy and Barnes & Noble.
With the launch of Macy's and the expansion of Friendly Center, this shopping center is set to remain a major center in Greensboro and the Triad area. The addition makes it larger than its enlosed counterpart across town, Four Seasons Town Centre. With the demographics changing and popularity shift toward lifestyle centers, Friendly is bound to grow. It already has stores like Banana Republic, The Limited, Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret, Express, The GAP, Old Navy, Eddie Bauer, Talbots, Birkenstock, Pier 1, New York & Company.
In early 2006, an expansion to Friendly Center began after the old Burlington Industries building was torn down. The new expansion known as The Shops at Friendly Center opened officially on October 19, 2006, and included many retail shops that are exclusive to the Triad area such as REI, Coldwater Creek, White House|Black Market, Pendleton, J. Jill and Johnston & Murphy. Additionally, new restaurants have joined the expanded center such as P.F. Chang's. On November 8 the 72,000 square foot Harris Teeter supermarket opened, making it the chain's largest. [1] The current Harris Teeter will be demolished and a BB&T office structure will be erected in its place.
