Friend William Richardson (born William Richardson) (December 1, 1865September 6, 1943), a newspaper publisher, served as a Republican Governor of California from January 9, 1923 until January 4, 1927. He was born in Michigan and died in Berkeley, California. Richardson also served as California State Treasurer, 1915-1923, having been elected on the Progressive ticket. He was the son of William Richardson and Rhoda (Dye) Richardson. A devout Quaker, he legally added the Quaker greeting to his name. He was a member of the Freemasons; Knights Templar; Shriners; Order of the Eastern Star; Elks; Kiwanis; Moose; Odd Fellows; Rotary; and Woodmen.

In July 1943, Richardson suffered a heart attack from which he never recovered, and died at his Berkeley home September 6, 1943. His ashs are inurned at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, California.
